As part of our Diversity and Inclusion Program here at Bio-Rad, we publish a monthly Multicultural Calendar of events that are commonly celebrated in the United States. Our goal is to feature a variety of events that help bring cultural awareness to various groups' histories, traditions, and accomplishments while also highlighting events important to us both as a company and a community.

National American Indian and Alaskan Native Heritage Month: All November

During Native American Heritage Month and throughout the year, we celebrate the rich histories, diverse cultures, and important contributions of America’s indigenous peoples. Historic sites across the country help tell the stories of native peoples. From the arrival of the first people, through the emergence of distinct Tribal nations who faced the upheaval of European settlement and into the modern day, the history of Native Americans is as dramatic as it is complex. This history and culture is an important part of our American story and this month is an important time for us each year to reflect on the history and contributions of our country's indigenous peoples. American Diabetes Month: All November

American Diabetes Month is held each year to ring the bell on the diabetes pandemic, provide education for the millions who are at risk for it, and provide platforms for those living with diabetes to tell their stories. For info on this year's focus on actions that can help prevent health problems associated with diabetes, click here.

Day of the Dead: November 2

Day of the Dead, or Día de los Muertos, is a traditional Mexican holiday when it is believed that the souls of the dead return to visit their living family members. Many people celebrate this day by visiting graves of loved ones and setting up altars with their favorite foods, drink, and photos. Click here for more info about this event.

Veteran's Day: November 11

First held on November 11, 1919, this date was chosen to recognize the armistice that ended World War I on November 11, 1918. Today, Veteran's Day is held to pay our respects to all those who have served. For more on the history and importance of Veteran's Day, click here.

Diwali: November 12

Diwali is the Hindu festival of lights with its variations also celebrated in other Indian religions. It symbolizes the spiritual "victory of light over darkness, good over evil, and knowledge over ignorance". Click here for a short video about Diwali.

Thanksgiving: November 24

Thanksgiving is a national holiday celebrated on various dates in the United States, Canada, Grenada, Saint Lucia, and Liberia. It began as a day of giving thanks and sacrifice for the blessing of the harvest and of the preceding year. For more info about its history, click here.

Celebrating National Mentoring Month

Bio-Rad is proud to join other companies, schools, and nonprofits across the U.S. in celebrating National Mentoring Month this January. Every year since 2002, U.S. Presidents and Congress have endorsed the campaign by officially designating January as National Mentoring Month.

We believe mentoring is incredibly beneficial for both mentors and mentees, providing avenues for growth, learning, and improved interpersonal skills. Bio-Rad has a growing mentorship program that explores career development, develops emerging leaders, and promotes diversity and inclusion. With a collaborative team that stretches across the globe, mentorships at Bio-Rad offer unique opportunities for employees to expand their knowledge and perspectives.

Bio-Rad currently has mentorship programs in six business units, including Regulatory Affairs, Life Science, Clinical Diagnostics, Global Human Resources, Global Information Technology, and Global Commercial Operations in Asia-Pacific. We are in the process of adding more business units in 2023. In addition, Bio-Rad provides opportunities for employees to mentor youth in our local communities through our Diversity & Inclusion Program.

Meet Praveena Garimella, Sr. R&D Manager

At Bio-Rad, we pride ourselves on providing opportunities for employees to develop their careers and take on new challenges. Just ask Sr. R&D Manager, Praveena Garimella, who has worked on a number of exciting projects in different roles since joining Bio-Rad in 2012.

“I first visited Bio-Rad while as a post-doctoral at UC Berkeley,” Praveena says, “and I was very impressed by the Bio-Rad campus, different people I met during my visit, and the fact that Bio-Rad seemed to have a great work culture.” She was hired as a Senior Scientist in the Bio-Consumables R&D group and later became part of a newly created Chemistry group that set up a new Synthetic Chemistry lab at Bio-Rad's Hercules campus.

Praveena has also held roles as a Staff Scientist and Sr. Staff Scientist, during which she worked on the introduction of Bio-Rad's Star-bright Product line for Western Blotting and Flow Cytometry applications. While her career has taken many exciting turns, she says one of the constant joys she has is working alongside people who feel like family.

"One of the cool things about Bio-Rad is that it’s like a big communal family here,” she says. “If there’s something you don’t understand or are curious about, people are very approachable and friendly. So just ask and you’ll find someone and you may learn a new skill.”

Meet Bio-Rad Scholarship Recipient Hillary Khuu!

With our 2023 Scholarship Program launching in the SF Bay Area, we reached out to one of last year’s scholarship recipients to learn about her journey since receiving her Bio-Rad Scholarship. Hillary Khuu is currently pursuing a degree in mechanical engineering at UC Berkeley and says her interests in science and engineering began at a young age.

“My dad’s a mechanic,” says Hillary, “So I would always see him build stuff and fix cars – and I used to want to be an inventor growing up. In high school, I joined MESA, which is a math, engineering, and science achievement club. We did some projects with a prosthetic arm and others related to civil engineering that I really enjoyed.”

Since starting at UC Berkeley last Fall, Hillary has continued to engage with a variety of projects both inside and outside of the classroom. “Throughout my first semester, I performed weekly green chemistry experiments, solved endless pages of integrals and series, and much more,” she says.

“I also explored seven libraries and engaged in multiple organizations, including Society of Women Engineers, NavCal, and Bridges Multicultural Resource Center. I even had the opportunity to meet UC Berkeley Chancellor Carol Christ during a Regents’ and Chancellor’s Scholars event!” Carol is pictured with Hillary above.

Hillary isn’t certain what she wants to do as a career yet, but says that is something she will figure out at Cal. “Now that I'm at Berkeley, I'm trying to find the intersection between engineering and computer science.”

As for advice to current high school students seeking scholarships or grants, Hillary says to start local. This is certainly something that worked out for Hillary, who went to Hercules High, just a few miles from Bio-Rad's corporate headquarters.

“I truly appreciate the Bio-Rad community and the Bio-Rad scholarship – you made a major impact on me!”

Bio-Rad is proud to join other organizations around the world today in celebrating International Women’s Day – an important worldwide effort to recognize the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. To celebrate this year, we reached out to different women at Bio-Rad and asked them what true equality and inclusion for women looks like to them.

These are just a few of the remarkable women who make up our workforce, and we appreciate the opportunity to honor them today. Special kudos to those who posed in the "Embrace Equity" pose to follow this year’s official International Women’s Day theme!

What does true equality and inclusion for women look like?

Angélique Duverger, Regional Supplier Quality Manager (France)

Workplace equity ensures that all employees have the appropriate support to achieve company goals. Women inclusion brings different skills and perspectives to the organization.

Zarrin Mohammadi, Software Development Manager (Hercules, CA)

In my personal view, equality means everyone is treated with respect and dignity and given the same opportunities regardless of their age, gender, race, and religion. That includes enabling women to earn as much as their male counterparts.
Inclusion is a universal human right. It is about giving equal access and opportunities and getting rid of discrimination and intolerance.

Jessie Jeyapalan, Regional Sales Manager (New York)

Making sure everyone has access to the same opportunities, and are equally involved and supported to get what they need to succeed.

Alexandra Burkhardt, Trade Compliance Specialist (Germany)

For me, equality means compassion, hope, and justice. It should be normal for people to live lovingly and respectfully with one another without any prejudice.

Khushnooma Italia, Field Product Manager, Marketing (Mumbai, India)

Equality and inclusion go a long way in the sustainable development of a society, gender equality being an important part of it. There are so many instances in history where women, if given the right opportunity, matched or even exceeded the performance of their male counterparts. Women are rightly believed to be emotionally, socially, and intellectually more stable. As the saying goes, there is a woman behind every successful man – which is a testament to the fact that men also need the strength of women to be successful. So, on this Women’s Day, let’s celebrate the ‘Woman’ and all her amazing attributes!!

True equality and inclusion in the workplace to me mean women's careers thrive, bias is minimized, and mentoring and guidance are the norms. It's when you don't notice you are the only woman in the room and we see equal gender representation throughout all levels of the organization.

Increasingly there is a need for diversity of thought and approach in business to be able to adapt to ever changing global economic climate and political change. We need inclusiveness that enables more voices the opportunity to speak to specific experiences and expertise. Much like how diversity in genetics enables different capabilities and talents, women in leadership will do the same and insure the next generation of business and social wellbeing.

True equality is not less, not more, but the same. 50% representation in every business, board of directors, and branch of government. Except for bodily autonomy – that is 100% ours.

Hackathon provides teams the chance to explore new ideas

More than 40 employees from Bio-Rad’s Life Science Software Development team met in our Northern California headquarters earlier this year for a lively “Hackathon.” From January 30 to February 3, the employees formed into teams to collaborate on exciting technological projects and then presented their solutions and demos at the end of the week.

John Norby, a Software Development Manager for Bio-Rad, says the Hackathon allowed team members to meet in person from locations including California, Texas, Michigan, and even Israel. “We’ve all been through a pandemic for the last two years, so we wanted to see if we could get everybody together face to face.”

John also says that the Hackathon provided employees the chance to explore new skillsets and specialties outside of their current roles. “It gives them a vision of something different than what they are doing on a daily basis,” John says. “We wanted people to be able to experiment with technologies and things that they haven’t been able to use.”

As to the types of projects that employees focused their work around, John says most were related to current projects already underway. “There were a lot of people who picked things that were adjacent to the projects we’re working on,” he says. “I think it really links directly to Bio-Rad's entrepreneurial spirit, because people came up with their own ideas and figured out how to do it,” John says.

John says the idea for this collaborative event was borrowed from Bio-Rad's Clinical Diagnostics Group, whose software development team also held a global hackathon in 2022 across the US, Israel, Poland, and India. Both teams plan to hold more in the future.

In the end, John says the hackathons help bring forward new ideas that Bio-Rad may be able to utilize in the future. “Even if we don’t gain product level implementation of something, we've shown how you can do it, and what the parts are you need to collect and get it done.”

Meet Bio-Rad Employee Deanna Simmons

Deanna Simmons began her career at Bio-Rad as a summer intern 16 years ago, and as she jokes, she “never left.” Deanna is now a global strategic account manager for the Company, and says the internship was a great introduction to the family atmosphere she enjoys at Bio-Rad.

“Bio-Rad is a large company but because of the amazing people and longevity of employees, it feels like a big family,” she says.

After finishing her internship, Deanna was hired as a contract employee while she finished her last semester of college. She was then offered a full-time position in inside sales, and has also worked in field sales, the channel partner team, and the global strategic accounts team where she works today.

“I've been so fortunate and so lucky to have opportunities within the organization to learn new product lines, to work with different types of customers and different divisions,” she says. “I just feel like they've given me plenty of opportunities to explore my passions and to help grow as a professional, so I just honestly can't imagine being anywhere else.”

She says Bio-Rad's mission is what invigorates her. “The best part about working for Bio-Rad is knowing you are working for a company that is advancing scientific discovery and improving the lives of others,” she says. “I also really like that Bio-Rad gives back, too. My family has participated in the Tour de Cure, AIDS Walk San Francisco, and donated through various relief funds where Bio-Rad matches funds.”

Deanna also says that she enjoys the increased focus Bio-Rad has placed on career development through things like the Bio-Rad Learning Academy. “Bio-Rad has put a big focus on career development and making sure there is a path for employees to grow within the organization,” she says. “I always take advantage of the learning opportunities available that can help me advance my skill set.”

Bio-Rad Welcomes Local High School for Tour of Corporate Headquarters

Bio-Rad recently hosted 28 sophomore students from Pinole Valley High School’s Biomedical Academy for an exciting tour of our corporate headquarters in Hercules, California. During the event, students were mentored by a diverse group of Bio-Rad employees who work in functions such as Manufacturing, Chemistry Development, HR, Legal, Compliance, and Quality Control.

Prior to the tour, the students performed an activity in their class using Bio-Rad protein gels from a kit donated by the Bio-Rad Explorer Program. The students then saw how the gels and electrophoresis apparatuses are made during a tour of two manufacturing plants in Hercules. To conclude, the students enjoyed lunch and a panel discussion with six employees who shared stories about their careers at Bio-Rad.

Brian Nguyen, a software quality assurance engineer in Bio-Rad's Life Science Group, is a Pinole Valley High School Graduate and says the tour offered young students a chance to learn about the many different career paths that are possible at Bio-Rad. “When I was their age as a student, I didn't know why I wanted to do,” Brian says. “I was still finding myself, and so now that I ended up here, even though I had a really wild path, I wanted to show that it's possible.”

Brian says he was grateful to help organize this year’s event, especially because he was once part of Pinole Valley’s Biomedical Academy himself. “Even though I ultimately wasn't interested in pursuing biology myself, I still wanted to be in biotech,” he says. “That's why, even though I'm a software engineer, I chose to work at Bio-Rad because I wanted to work in the healthcare field.”

Eliza Zoffada, a corporate events & community involvement project manager, says the event helped illustrate the wide range of opportunities that Bio-Rad offers young job candidates. “It's so great that the students were able to see that you don't have to be a scientist to work at Bio-Rad,” she says. “Regardless of who you are or what you do, you can find a home here.”

Celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month

Every May, Bio-Rad joins countless others in celebrating Asian American and Pacific Islander (APPI) Heritage Month. During this month-long celebration, we are proud to recognize the historical and cultural contributions of individuals and groups of Asian and Pacific Islander descent in the United States.

To celebrate this year, we offered Bio-Rad employees in these communities the opportunity to share a bit about their backgrounds and cultural traditions with us. These are just a few of the amazing Asian and Pacific Islander people who make up our workforce, and we are honored to spotlight them today. Happy AAPI Heritage Month, everyone!

Maria Crisostomo, Sr. Sales Core Lab Product Manager (Hercules, California)

What makes you proud to be Asian or Pacific Islander?

My Dad, along with some close friends and relatives, were one of the first generations to emigrate from the Philippines to the US in the early 1900's to seek a better life and more opportunities. As a first generation Filipino American, I was inspired by their bravery and thirst to improve their lives and wanted to ensure these traits transferred to my children as second-generation Filipino Americans, so they can be positive contributors to our communities.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you value?

The Filipino culture is a very welcoming culture and treats close friends as family. This tradition extends into always ensuring everyone is well fed and is invited to all milestone celebrations (birthdays, Easter/Christmas, academic graduations, weddings, etc.). To complement these celebrations, the Filipino culture loves to include live music, singing, and dancing.

Kevin Darmasaputra, Sr. Engineer, Digital Biology Group (Pleasanton, California)

What makes you proud to be Asian or Pacific Islander?
As a Chinese-Indonesian, I'm most proud of my ancestors' journey. My grandparents immigrated from China to Indonesia. Today I'm here in the US after immigrating from Indonesia, following their footsteps.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you value?

Cheng Beng - visiting the tomb of deceased family members while catching up with other family members that travel from afar. We prepare dishes that the ancestors supposedly like, sweep the tomb, and burn joss papers.

Anie Pelletier, Software QA IV (Boulder, Colorado)

What makes you proud to be Asian American or Pacific Islander?

Having a strong family relationship and social interaction. I also have a hobby that involves culture from Indonesia, the country I come from. My hobby involves a music and dance group that I lead, inline with UNESCO cultural heritage: gamelan (brass xylophone percussion and shadow puppet) from Java, Indonesia. I was surprised when CBS Channel 4 Denver called me to interview me and have my group perform in their studio. This is the link to the video.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear?

Respect and value to senior people, which involves recognizing their value and importance as human beings and treating them accordingly. Being respectful of other people is an important value, including demonstrating a concern for people we interact with and treating them as equals. Another tradition involves my beliefs and the following values: Forgiveness, gift giving, sharing, and caring, especially during the Ramadhan and Led (End of Ramadhan) Holiday.

What makes you proud to be Asian or Pacific Islander?

I am proud of the feeling of family and community that is emphasized a lot in Asian values. We are always helping each other out for the benefit of the greater community. I have witnessed a lot of resilience, the willingness to endure hardships, and definitely the persevere towards achieving goals. I find these more and more fascinating the more I connect with my Asian heritage.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you value?

One of my family traditions includes fun Chinese New Year get-togethers, where we have dinner banquets of around 100 people for the extended Lee family. It's heartwarming to maintain a relationship with family members of different ages and personalities, and every senior member of the family is addressed as "Uncle" or "Auntie". It's just our way of treating our elders with respect and fondness, regardless of their background.

Vanitha Margan, Global Product Manager, Immunoassays (Hercules, California)

What makes you proud to be Asian or Pacific Islander?

I was born and raised in Malaysia and from a South Indian Tamil heritage. I'm proud to be Asian because the country I came from is very diverse in ethnicity, culture, and language, which enabled me to be multi-lingual, adaptable, tolerant, and respectful of other cultures.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you value?

Even though I was born and raised outside of India and have never been to India, my family and I celebrate the cultural events and speak the Tamil language. I value my Tamil language as it's one of the world's longest surviving classical languages and I've made sure my daughter is fluent in the language to ensure my family preserves it for at least another generation.

Amrrutraj Maannambeth, Product Manager, Life Science Group (India)

What makes you proud to be Asian or Pacific Islander?

I’m proud that India is considered as spiritual capital of the world. In this era of uncertainty, it's essential to have a calm and sound mind to make holistic decisions. One way this could be achieved is through following any one of the numerous mediation techniques which originated here.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you value?

Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam, which means "The World Is One Family” and it also means “all living beings on the earth are a family”. If we believe and walk on this path, the world will be a better place to live, and it can be sustained for our future generations to come.

Patsy Kennedy, Sr. Director, Global Talent Development (Hercules, California)

What makes you proud to be Asian or Pacific Islander?

I am extremely proud to be a Chinese American because this embodies both the pride I have about my Chinese ancestry and the opportunities I have as an American citizen. My parents immigrated to the US, specifically California, with three small children, to a place that was completely foreign to them, in both language and culture. It took tremendous courage and resilience for my mom and dad to leave their family in Hong Kong so that my siblings and I had the chance to have an excellent education and better future prospects. Our accomplishments are attributed to not only what can be achieved in the US and to the sacrifices my parents made to ensure that success. I am forever grateful to my parents and thankful that I am an American.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you value?

The cultural tradition I hold dear is Chinese New Year celebration. This is where the entire family gathers to pay respect to the elders, share delicious food, and red envelopes. It's great fun to hear generational stories by my dad, eat the “seven” lucky dishes, and pass out red envelopes of money to the younger or unmarried family members. I also enjoy all the “dos and don’ts,” such as “do wear something red because it symbolizes good luck and fortune” and “don’t wash your hair on New Year’s Day because you will wash away the good luck that the new year will bring”. It is truly a special tradition that I hope my children will pass on to their children.

What makes you proud to be Asian or Pacific Islander?

I am proud to be represent my heritage because it connects me to my roots of where my ancestors have come from. It is a great honor!

What is one cultural or family tradition that you value?

While there are many celebrated Indian holidays, one of the holidays that I enjoy celebrating most is Holi. Bio-Rad Holds 2023 Scholarship Awards Ceremony

Students celebrate their accomplishment at Bio-Rad's 2023 Scholarship Awards Ceremony on May 18, 2023.

More than 30 Bio-Rad scholarship recipients were invited to Bio-Rad's Northern California headquarters for our 2023 Scholarships Awards Ceremony, the first of its kind since 2019. During the event, it was clear that all the participants were excited by the opportunity to meet in person.

“It’s always super heartfelt to see all the kids and their families come in for the ceremonies,” says Eliza Zoffada, Bio-Rad's community involvement and employee activities project manager. “And then the pandemic hit, we still received the applications, but it was more just their names and photos.

“We didn’t have the chance to meet students in person the last few years. So, when we had the scholarship ceremony this year, to see all the students that we had chosen in person and with their families with them, it was just hard to take,” Eliza says.

One of this year’s recipients, Madison Tan, says she enjoyed meeting Eliza and other members of the Bio-Rad team. “I’ve used Bio-Rad products quite a bit since I had an internship at the Berkeley lab, so I already kind of knew about the program,” Madison says. “Everyone was so welcoming, and I thought it was a great environment that was cultivated.”

Guest speakers included 2022 scholarship recipient Hillary Khuu, and the recipient of this year’s David & Alice Schwartz Award, Nadine Tendean. Also invited to speak was the recipient of this year’s Ron Mardigian Memorial Scholarship, Ella Chae. Due to a busy week of finals, Ella’s essay was read by the Director of Bio-Rad's Explorer Program, Bryony Ruegg.

Bio-Rad awarded a total of 34 scholarships this year to high school seniors in Northern California. Since 2003, Bio-Rad has proudly awarded more than 250 college scholarships to graduating high school seniors interested in pursuing careers in science and engineering.

Every June, Bio-Rad joins others around the world in celebrating Pride, an entire month dedicated to the uplifting of LGBTQ+ voices, culture, and rights. The LGBTQ+ rights movement has made tremendous strides over the past few decades, but we recognize that additional progress and visibility is needed, especially during Pride Month. As part of our celebration this month, Bio-Rad invited US employees the opportunity to talk about what Pride means to them. Here's what they had to say.

Steven Wang, Engineering Manager, Digital Biology Group (Ann Arbor, Michigan)

What makes you proud to be part of the LGBTQIA+ Community or act as an Ally?

I’m proud to be part of a community that has fought so hard for our human rights and to see the growing acceptance both in the public and in my own family. Coming out was very difficult as I lived in the South and my culture is not traditionally accepting of being LGBTQIA+. I never imagined then I would be able to get married to the person I love. Both my husband and I are immigrants from other countries that are not accepting of being LGBTQIA+. The life we have built together is a reminder of how far we have come and how much we have accomplished as a community.

What activities or traditions do you participate in during the month of Pride?

My husband and I met in June so it’s always a special month for us to celebrate our anniversary. In the past, I have also attended Pride. Nowadays, we like to spend time with family and friends as a reminder of the wonderful support system we have.

Shannon Kilkenny, Scientist, Digital Biology Group (Boulder, Colorado)

What makes you proud to be part of the LGBTQIA+ Community or act as an Ally?

My wife (pictured at right) makes me proud to be part of the LGBTQIA+ community. The outreach and influence that she has in her career and within our community as a whole is astounding. I am so proud to be married to someone who takes inclusion and equity so seriously. Being married to her has given me the strength to be proud to be queer and to wear it on my sleeve so that no one needs to feel afraid to be themselves around me. Because of her, I don't have to apologize for who I am.

What activities or traditions do you participate in during the month of Pride?

This month, we will be lucky enough to host a workout through the OUT foundation at a local crossfit gym for our community (including allies). We always celebrate at Denver Pride and try to make it to local area prides if we can. We love to celebrate Pride all year long by being out and proud so that those who aren't ready will have an example of what safe love looks like.

Jim Fitzpatrick, Global e-Business Manager, Global Commercial Services (Hercules, California)

What makes you proud to be part of the LGBTQIA+ Community or act as an Ally?

I am super proud and happy to be part of this wonderful, inclusive community. But it wasn't always that way. As a teen, when I realized I was different from others around me, I fought it. For years I wanted to be 'normal', like others, but I couldn't change the way I was and am. At 18, I burst open the closet door and it was the most liberating experience of my life. I quickly discovered that others in my high school, including our class president, were also members of this community - I wasn't alone! I am also very fortunate to have, in my early 20s, met the love of my life, and on June 24, 2023, we celebrate 43 years together. We've been legally married since 2008. Our wedding followed the 'Gavin Newsom San Francisco wedding order' of 2004, later annulled by the courts, where we spent 8 hours in line at SF City Hall. The following Monday I received lots of congratulations from Bio-Rad peers and managers who had seen us on the bay area news and CNN!

What activities or traditions do you participate in during the month of Pride?

Attend the Sacramento Pride Parade and Festival, and sometimes San Francisco too. Went to NYC in 2019 for the 50th anniversary of Stonewall. Attend Sacramento Gay Men's Chorus Pride Concert. Contribute to the Sacramento LGBTQ Community Center (a year-round activity actually).

John Gwynn, Mechanical/Electrical Designer, Clinical Diagnostics (Hercules, California)

What makes you proud to be part of the LGBTQIA+ Community or act as an Ally?

I recently read online that Pride Month is a sort of silly tradition with ridiculous flags and parades, but that we do it because there are scared queer people who live in places where it's dangerous for them to just be themselves and live full and complete lives; and we need to keep fighting and celebrating until its safe for everyone to do that.

What activities or traditions do you participate in during the month of Pride?

There is nothing I do that is that different during the month of Pride, as I already frequent gay establishments and bars and celebrate with gay friends. I suppose there are more festivities and parades to attend, and I always try to go and experience a part of gay culture that is new to me.

Bio-Rad Sponsors Robotics Program at Local High School

This past school year, Bio-Rad was proud to again support the Robotics Club at Hercules High School. After working on their robot throughout the year, the Robotics Club was able to put their roving invention to the test at a pair of robotics competitions in the Bay Area.

The competitions included the First Teach Challenge in San Jose, California and the PIE Robotics Competition at the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory in Berkeley, California.

In April, while donning the Bio-Rad green, the robot took 3rd place at the PIE Robotics Competition out of roughly 20 teams competing! From all of Bio-Rad, congrats to all the talented students who worked on this year's robot!

In addition to sponsoring the robotics program, Bio-Rad is involved in a number of community involvement initiatives in the Bay Area and beyond, including the Bio-Rad Explorer Program and our annual Bio-Rad Scholarship Program.

Bio-Rad Publishes 2022 Corporate Sustainability Report

Earlier this week, Bio-Rad published its corporate sustainability report for 2022, providing an update on Bio-Rad’s progress towards achieving its long-term sustainability targets. Things we are tracking include carbon emissions, operational energy, diversity and inclusion, sustainable packaging, and anti-corruption measures.

In the U.S., 10% of our energy use was renewable, a result of energy generated by our 4MW solar array at our Hercules, CA headquarters. By 2030, Bio-Rad aims to use 100% renewable energy across our U.S. operations.

With many of our sustainability goals hitting in 2030, Bio-Rad senior leadership believes the company has a tremendous opportunity to make a number of important strides in key areas over the next several years.

Celebrating Random Acts of Workplace Kindness

At Bio-Rad, we like surprising our employees with Random Acts of Workplace Kindness (RAWK for short). We like this acronym because Bio-Rad employees really do ROCK, and we want them to feel appreciated and celebrated – and sometimes that means delivering ice cream to them in a vintage VW bus (like in the video below!).

Bio-Rad employees in NorCal enjoy an unexpected treat outside the office.

Eliza Zoffada, a corporate events & community involvement project manager for Bio-Rad, says that RAWK events are one of her favorite aspects of her job. “I just love seeing the joy these little events bring our employees,” she says. “It’s a great way to show love and appreciation!”

Eliza says Bio-Rad first began the program in 2020 during the COVID-19 pandemic. “We didn’t call it RAWK back then, but we had a lot of essential employees still coming in to work, so we wanted to make sure they felt appreciated.”

During the most difficult stretches of the pandemic, Eliza delivered pastries to teams throughout the Bay Area. Eliza and her team called the effort, “Operation Spreading Joy,” and it often involved multiple deliveries every week to help keep employees' spirits high.

With the COVID-19 pandemic now settling into the background, the stakes are not quite as high these days, but delivering joy and kindness remains a top priority. “Bio-Rad employees are so dedicated to their jobs, and it’s nice to show them how much we appreciate them. And it makes it so fun when people aren’t expecting it.”

In the video above, Eliza talks about “Operation Spreading Joy,” which involved her delivering pastries to various teams throughout the Bay Area during the pandemic.

How Our Employees Are Growing with the Bio-Rad Learning Academy

When Bio-Rad launched its Learning Academy in 2022, our goal was to give all employees the opportunity to learn, grow, and develop around a shared set of critical business skills. Now a year in, our global learning platform is changing the way Bio-Rad employees learn by providing access anywhere, anytime.

Bio-Rad employees have the opportunity to complete eLearning modules that fit into their schedules or register for live-online virtual courses, offered in multiple languages, across a diversity of topics. To learn more, we checked in with a few employees to find out what aspects of the Learning Academy have helped them the most over the last year.

Michelle Zhang, Sr. Accountant, Finance (Australia)

“It can sometimes be difficult to find big chunks of time, so I took courses when I was waiting for the train or at the airport, or even before having lunch in a café. Sometimes you just have to squeeze it in when you can, so the online courses suited me well.”

Employees also appreciate the fact that the Learning Academy is designed around a shared set of skills and foundational knowledge, providing opportunities for Bio-Rad employees to sharpen their skills in areas that will help them wherever their career takes them.

Abhishek Mukherjee, Director of Logistics, Global Supply Chain (California)

“The Bio-Rad Learning Academy offers different Learning tracks with multiple Levels. One of my goals was to gain a better understanding of Bio-Rad’s financial performance and goals, so I selected the Financial & Business Acumen skill track. I used this knowledge to get insights into Bio-Rad Financial Reports and relate it to our Global Supply Chain goals.”

In addition to helping employees learn new concepts and skills, the Learning Academy is also designed to help employees grow in their careers and adjust to changes or shifts they make.

Marilia Tavares, Field Application Manager, Clinical Diagnostics Sales (Dubai)

“The Learning Academy launch happened exactly at a challenging moment of my career at Bio-Rad. I suddenly changed my role and felt the need to consolidate some concepts and feel more confident with others.”

Marilia also says that the Learning Academy has helped her outside of work, as well. “You really feel that you are growing, not only as a professional, but also as a person. Bio-Rad, as a company that cares, is giving us the opportunity to learn, to grow, to become better. I can't see any excuse not to take advantage of it.”

Bio-Rad Hosts Local Students from Bio-Tech Summer Academy

Bio-Rad recently opened up our Pleasanton location to San Francisco Bay Area high school students participating in a weeklong Bio-Tech Summer Academy. The event was organized in collaboration with Bay Area LEEDS, an organization Bio-Rad has sponsored for over a decade in support of the work they do to develop tomorrow’s STEM workforce.

More than 25 students visited our Pleasanton office on July 27 for a tour of the facility, keynote speakers, a career roundtable, and student presentations judged by Bio-Rad employees. For many students, this was their first introduction to biotechnology.

“I haven’t taken a bio course or anything in high school, so it was fun to learn a little bit more.," said Darsh Doshi. "I was mostly here to explore the subjects, and we also got to do a lot of experiments; it was fun to try something new.”

As part of their assignment for the week, students were tasked with delivering a “pitch” to a team of investors (industry judges) after considering the benefits, disadvantages, and societal effects of CRISPR, a revolutionary gene editing tool. The assignment was designed for students to weigh the pros and cons of a real world biotechnology topic affecting our society.

One of the keynote speakers, Darren Link, VP of Bio-Rad's Digital Biology Group R&D Team, says that the students brought an exciting energy to the Pleasanton campus. “We are all on our own journey, and anything that can be informative for a young person, I love to do it,” he says. “I love to see their excitement at this stage of their life. It’s fantastic.”

Tips and Tricks for Landing your Dream Job

With the unpredictability of the job market in recent years, it’s important for job candidates to identify ways that they can stand out from the crowd. To find out how, we spoke with Bio-Rad's US Talent Acquisition Team, who provided some of their best tips and tricks for landing that coveted interview, and ultimately, your next big job.

Putting Together Your Resume

It may seem like a no-brainer, but before applying to any job, our team says it’s important to read the job qualifications and make sure you’re actually qualified before you apply. From there, make sure your resume is tailored to the role you’re seeking.

Start with a quick, one-to-two sentence description of why you’re qualified.

“Recruiters generally don’t have time to read every word on every resume, and when you're going through 100 resumes, you have to be able to screen them quickly and make a decision,” says Kelly DeMorais, Talent Acquisition Lead for Bio-Rad.

Use bullet points with action words that describe the work you’ve done.

“You want to quickly describe what you’ve done and tell a story in a succinct way,” says Angela Kane, Talent Acquisition Lead for Bio-Rad.

If you have gaps in employment, provide info on what you were doing during these times.
Whenever possible, quantify things as a way to give tangible insights into your accomplishments.
Stick to simple formatting and avoid anything too busy. While you want to be succinct, our recruiters say that it’s perfectly ok for a resume to go to two pages.
Proofread, proofread, proofread. Make sure your work history matches what you have on your LinkedIn profile.

“We've all been there, done that, when it comes to typos, and it’s just heartbreaking to think that one typo could be the difference,” Kelly says.

Always upload your resume as a document — not a LinkedIn profile. Submitting a link creates more work for recruiters and may decrease the chances that you're noticed. Lastly, use an email address that’s simple so it’s easy for recruiters to contact you.

Cover Letters

While our team doesn’t consider cover letters a must, they say that cover letters do provide something “extra” that other candidates may be missing.

Keep cover letters brief and include anything you didn’t cover in your resume.
Short and sweet is the name of the game. Our team recommends something less than one page, usually two paragraphs max.

Interviewing

Before starting the interview process, do your research into the company and what they do so that you’re knowledgeable about them.

Before interviewing, prepare a 2-3 minute elevator pitch of why you’re the perfect fit.
Dress for success, whether interviewing virtually or in person. "I think some people have gotten too casual with Zoom calls thinking it's not the same level of dress attire, and that's absolutely not true,” Kelly says. “The rule thumb is that you should always be dressed better than the person who's interviewing you,” Angela adds.
For virtual interviews, do your best to hold eye contact and keep up a conversation like you would in person. Don’t shy away from using hand gestures on camera.
Prepare a question or two that shows genuine interest in the role. Also be sure to ask what the next steps in the process are.
Don’t be afraid to ask other questions, and like anything else, practice makes perfect!

Bio-Rad Employees Hold Volunteer Day at Local Food Bank

Bio-Rad Employees Volunteer at Local Food Bank

Earlier this summer, more than 30 Bio-Rad employees from our Life Science Group (LSG) R&D Team participated in a team “volunteer day” sorting and bagging produce for the Contra Costa and Solano Food Bank in Northern California. During the volunteer effort, a group of 21 employees volunteered at the food bank’s Concord, California warehouse while another 15 employees spent time at their Fairfield, California warehouse.

Jeff Blitstein, an engineering manager for Bio-Rad, says he began volunteering at the food bank last year and wanted to invite more employees to create a bigger impact. “Since December, myself and a number of colleagues in R&D have gone back out there every six weeks or so to volunteer at either the Concord warehouse or the Fairfield facility,” Jeff says.

Prior to the recent volunteer effort, Bio-Rad has also donated to the food bank as part of the Company’s annual food drive. At the end of 2022, the food bank reported that a record number of people are now turning to them for help — 250,000 people a month, in fact.

After coordinating with the food bank on a plan to lend a helping hand, Jeff took his idea to Trey Marlow, VP of LSG R&D. “Trey thought it would be a great team building activity for the department, and so it kind of went from there and then we started talking about dates,” Jeff says.

Bio-Rad employees made a major impact, sorting tens of thousands of pounds of potatoes, onions, and bread. “The Concord facility had a coordinator monitoring everything,” Jeff says, “so they actually got their weight for their activity, and they did just under 10,000 pounds of goods. We divided that up by the number of volunteers and it was 470 pounds per person for that two-hour shift, so that’s moving pretty good.

“We did not have that level of coordination in Fairfield, but we did an eyeball estimate, and we called it a tie," Jeff jokes. He says that the department is planning another volunteer opportunity in October or November, and expects another great turnout.

"I think it resonated with a lot of people because I think during the pandemic, a lot of us were probably donating money," Jeff says.

"But this is much more personal. When you make an investment in your own time, it feels more tangible. Feels more meaningful."

From September 15 to October 15, Bio-Rad is honored to join countless others in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month in the United States. As part of our celebration this year, we asked Bio-Rad employees to tell us why they are proud to be Hispanic or Latino American, and what cultural or family traditions that they value most.

These are just a few of the amazing people from this community who make up our workforce, and we are honored to spotlight them today. Happy Hispanic Heritage Month!

Jerilyn Woodson, Chemist II (Texas)

What makes you proud to be Hispanic or Latino American? My large, supportive, amazing family - we are always there for each other no matter what!

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear, or what is something you do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? Making tamales with my Nana will always hold a special place in my heart!

Alice Valentin-Torres, Field Application Specialist II (Ohio)

What makes you proud to be Hispanic or Latino American? I take immense pride in my Puerto Rican heritage, cherishing the island for its breathtaking natural beauty, rich cultural legacy and history, but above all, it's the resilient and compassionate people of Puerto Rico who fill me with pride. Growing up on the island instilled in me a profound sense of fortitude and determination, qualities that have proven invaluable, especially during the demanding journey of graduate school.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear, or what is something you do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? The cultural tradition that I hold dear is " Los Tres Reyes Magos" celebrated on January 6th. On the evening of January 5th, children gather grass and water placing them by their Christmas tree or beside their beds for the horses (or camels) that carry the Three Wise Men. In return, the Reyes Magos provide gifts for the children. I feel fortunate to visit Puerto Rico annually during this period, partaking in the grass-gathering tradition with my nieces.

What makes you proud to be Hispanic or Latino American? La musica! The music I've heard for as long as I can remember. From large family parties to special occasions, it's always there and I always enjoy it.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear, or what is something you do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? Christmas eve tamales! My maternal grandparents made them for our very large extended family instead of presents and we still try to do it every year.

Tania Mijas, Supply Assurance Manager (California)

What makes you proud to be Hispanic or Latino American? The Latin America heritage emphasizes the power of perseverance and resilience, never give up. The culture puts much value on hard work, even more when times get tough. Being a Brazilian is not just about the food, parties and carnival, there is so much history behind it, including the hard work and struggles that remind us of where we came from.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear, or what is something you do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? We have two big events when we celebrate our culture. One, June Traditional Festivals where we celebrate three catholic saints: Saint John, Saint Peter and Saint Anthony with lots of regional foods and music. Two, our beautiful Carnival tradition where we celebrate the most beautiful Samba Schools with their history and music in the avenue. The Carnival of cultures exists for the purpose of promoting the creativity and artistic expression of artists whose works give new meaning to the folk arts.

What makes you proud to be Hispanic or Latino American? The history and richness of the culture. Even as a second-generation Mexican-American in California, Latino histories weren't taught in school so it's something I've enjoyed learning and connecting with on my own.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear, or what is something you do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? My family is very close and we've been able to take several trips together, which are always a great time. My dad & I always make a point to go on at least one adventure on our own. We've explored Mayan pyramids, swam in underground cenotes, taken cooking classes from a Mexican chef, and walked across active volcanoes. It's the highlight of every trip for me.

What makes you proud to be Hispanic or Latino American? What makes me proud to be Latino American is that being Latino is not just adopting one set of cultures and traditions; it is a combination of many. I am proud to have European, American, and Indigenous identities.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear, or what is something you do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? My favorite time of the year is Christmas. Every year my immediate and extended family get together to catch up...but only after we make a giant pot of tamales, Abuelita hot chocolate, Champurrado, and other traditional goodies. The day after Christmas we meet up again to eat homemade Menudo. These will be the memories I will miss as time goes on.

Elane Reyes-Aviles, Account Executive III (Washington/Utah)

What makes you proud to be Hispanic or Latino American? I am proud of being Puerto Rican because I grew up in a small island with a big heart and a strong sense of community. I remember growing up when natural disasters hit us such as hurricanes, neighbors would mobilize to clean up roads, share supplies such as food and water, and check on the wellbeing of neighbors. My dad is a retired National Guard officer, and he took the lead after the devastation of hurricane Maria to clear out roads by cutting down trees, checking on his neighbors, and sharing his expertise on survival. The motto was always, the little that we have, we share, because we are all in the same situation and we stick together.

What is one cultural or family tradition that you hold dear, or what is something you do to celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month? One tradition that I hold dear is el Dia de los Reyes Magos (Three Kings Day) which is our traditional Christmas that occurs in January. Typically, children get grass on January 5th and put it in a shoebox so they can “feed the horses of the Three Kings”. It was always exciting growing up to see the grass spread out near our Christmas tree and see all the toys. I have two kids and I look forward to starting this tradition with my three-year-old son this year.😊

Bio-Rad Rides Tour de Cure in Support of the American Diabetes Association

More than 30 Bio-Rad employees, family, and friends came together on Sunday, October 1 for the Northern California Tour de Cure, a bike ride that aims to find a cure for diabetes. Employees have raised over $15,000 for this year’s event, with a $25,000 sponsorship also planned.

For many employees, the Tour de Cure is a source of pride each and every year. “I've been doing the Tour de Cure ever since I joined Bio-Rad about ten years ago,” says Brian Wilson, Director of R&D Engineering for Bio-Rad's Life Science Group. “I’ve had the opportunity to ride their 100-mile bicycle ride and their 64-mile bicycle routes.”

Team Captain Ragani Harris has also been involved with the event for several years and is proud of the impact she has made with others at Bio-Rad. “For more than a decade, I've been riding with the team, serving on the Tour de Cure committee for eight years, and captaining the team for five years,” Ragani says. “I've had the privilege of working with leaders from our Company and the ADA, witnessing first-hand how we play a role in the success of this event.”

The Tour de Cure’s ongoing efforts to find a cure for diabetes align closely to Bio-Rad's mission to advance science and save lives, together. We have been participating at Tour de Cure for more than 25 years, contributing more than $1 million to the American Diabetes Association during this time.

In the coming years, we hope to assemble larger teams to maximize the impact we can make together. “We would love to have more employees from Bio-Rad, their families, and our extended communities experience this impactful ride with us,” Ragani says.

For some easy ideas on how to get started, we spoke with members of Bio-Rad's US Talent Acquisition Team and US Employer Branding team to carve out these tips and tricks on how to build your brand and grow your career.

Use LinkedIn to Your Advantage

Named Business Insider’s “Most Trusted Network” with more than 950 million users, LinkedIn is the easiest way to build your brand and reach a large audience. There’s a reason job seekers across the world use it to connect and find work.

Update your profile (and set it to public)
People are researching you, and you have an opportunity to control what they discover. Keep your profile up to date with a great headshot, background image, and an updated work history.
Look for opportunities to connect
Your LinkedIn profile gives you the option to show that you’re open to finding a new job or that you provide certain services. “Candidates should definitely use the indicator to let talent partners know that they’re available for work,” says Kelly DeMorais, Talent Acquisition Lead for Bio-Rad. “We also recommend joining groups of interest and following companies that they’re interested in working for.”
Create an eye-catching headline
Consider this your elevator pitch. You have 220 characters to tell every profile visitor what you do and why you do it. Try to answer these questions in one line: What do you do? Where do you work? What impact do you have? Why does what you do matter?
Request and reciprocate recommendations
Strengthen your profile by asking your connections to write recommendations and provide your own as appropriate. You can also select up to 50 skills to show areas where you shine.

Get Engaged on Social Media

Once again, LinkedIn is your friend here. If you’re up for it, you can establish yourself as an industry expert by creating unique content and sharing it to your network. But there are smaller actions you can take, too, that can still help you get noticed and make connections.

Like, comment, share!
When you see an interesting piece of content, like and share the content or leave a comment. You can also cross promote content across different social platforms.
Utilize trending hashtags that are relevant to the content you’re sharing.
Use your own voice and reveal your personality and professional attributes in your profile and in posts that you create.
“LinkedIn is a great way to show your expertise and personality. Sharing posts is one of the easiest ways to become more active and strengthen your professional network,” says Ray Aguilera, Social Media Manager at Bio-Rad. “People respond to authenticity, so don’t worry about creating the ‘perfect’ post. Instead focus on sharing content that is meaningful or relevant to you and join in on comments when you find interesting conversations happening.”

Join Talent Networks or Meet in Person at a Career Fair

If there is a specific company you’re interested in working for, explore their careers site and look for ways to join a talent network so you receive company updates and exclusives.

For Bio-Rad, you can join our talent network on the homepage of our US Careers Site. “This gives people the opportunity to be notified of future opportunities outside of the ones that they’re applying to — and they will also receive our quarterly newsletter and other info,” says Angela Kane, Talent Acquisition Lead for Bio-Rad.
Look for opportunities to join a career fair by following a company on LinkedIn or seeing if they have information on their careers site. “If you see a company is having a career fair, consider that a great opportunity,” says Angela. “We always post when we are going to attend a career fair on our careers site.” (These can typically be found on our Life at Bio-Rad Blog.)

Some may take a walk when they need a break; others might meditate or chat with their coworkers. Then there are those who pick up a ping pong paddle and whack a tiny ball around.

There are a lot of those types at Bio-Rad, as evidenced by the ping pong tables at some of our locations in Northern California. At Bio-Rad's corporate headquarters in Hercules, California, there are even enough ping pong players to hold the occasional ping pong tournament.

“Before COVID, every single year there used to be a ping pong tournament hosted by our Life Science Group (LSG) team,” says Brian Nguyen, a LSG software quality assurance engineer. “I’m fairly new, but my team lead is a big fan of ping pong, so he would plan it every single year and so I volunteered to help out this year.”

Brian says finding players for the tournament wasn’t too difficult because there is already a team chat for employees who meet to play during work breaks. “I think the biggest challenge was finding the balance between having someone like me, who doesn’t play a lot, and others who are like semi-pro players,” Brian says. “So what we did is we tried to make the singles games ultra competitive, but then in the doubles it was kind of like a ‘Round Robin’ where you get paired with someone of a different skill level to make it fair.”

The result was a fun, competitive singles and doubles tournament held between September and October of this year (some footage from the Singles Final is shown in the video at top). Congrats to Xiangdong Meng on the win!

Brian says LSG may challenge the Digital Biology Group in Pleasanton, California to a tournament in the future, too. “I don't think the word got out to Pleasanton this year, but I know they have an outdoor ping pong table and we have an indoor one....so that could be fun.”

During your time at Bio-Rad, what type of opportunities have you witnessed the Company provide to women engineers like yourself?

During my tenure at Bio-Rad, I have been offered opportunities to grow my career. I started here as a junior engineer and have grown through a variety of projects to be a technical leader and people manager. I have been given great mentorship at Bio-Rad to hone my technical skills and was given many opportunities to learn on the job.

Bio-Rad Employee Fights Global Blood Shortage Through Blood Drives

The stories began flooding in at the height of the pandemic. Stephanie J. Wong, a Senior Account Manager for Bio-Rad's Clinical Diagnostics Group, heard them in online forums and in interactions with her customers: Blood banks and hospital laboratories were running out of blood.

“There was a blood banker that posted, ‘How bad has the shortage been for you? Have you had to decide who to save?’” Stephanie says. “No laboratory professional should ever have to be in that situation, so that inspired me to become a blood donor myself. The global shortage continues.”

In 2022, Stephanie began exploring ways to leverage Bio-Rad's longstanding reputation in the healthcare industry to better the situation. In 2023, she helped organize five separate blood drives either on a Bio-Rad campus or at an external event where Bio-Rad had a presence. In total, there has been enough blood collected at these events to save roughly 534 lives!

At the first blood drive she organized at Bio-Rad's headquarters in Hercules, 58 Bio-Rad employees donated. Stanford Blood Center, who processed the donations, said afterward that it was one of the most successful blood drives they’ve ever ran.

Stephanie kept this momentum going throughout the year, culminating in two blood drives in December, including one at the Aiea Christmas Parade in partnership with the Blood Bank of Hawaii.

Her goal at the event was to promote blood donation and spotlight laboratory professionals she works with in Hawaii. "At the heart of every lab is community. As a partner of all labs within the state, I wanted to unify laboratory professionals and help promote their field of work as they are often unspoken heroes in healthcare. There is also a shortage of workers in this field globally. We had about 150 people representing the laboratory community in the parade!”

Where does her passion come from? Stephanie says that caring for her customers is just something she’s learned to do throughout her 20-year career at Bio-Rad. “We've always been a company that takes care of people like we want to be taken care of, and there aren't many companies that treat our customers as well as we do,” Stephanie says. “So I thought, ‘this would be a good opportunity for us to help the laboratory community in a big way.’”

Random Acts of Workplace Kindness

At Bio-Rad, we invite new ideas and even thinking outside of the box as a way to spark creativity and innovation. This was the motivation behind a lively “Hackathon" held earlier this year in which employees formed into teams to collaborate on exciting technological projects and then presented their solutions at the end of the week. Giving Back

2023 Scholarships Awards Ceremony

One of our favorite things about 2023 was the ability to begin meeting in person again for things like our Bio-Rad Scholarships Awards Ceremony. On May 18, more than 30 Bio-Rad scholarship recipients were invited to Bio-Rad's Northern California headquarters for the ceremony, the first of its kind since 2019. Supporting the Scientists of Tomorrow

Beyond the Bio-Rad Scholarship Program, we support and foster science education in a number of ways. In 2023, this involved things like sponsoring a robotics program at a local high school, offering a tour of our corporate headquarters to high schoolers, and supporting a Bio-Tech Summer Academy in the San Francisco Bay Area.

Giving Back to Our Local Communities

From food drives to charitable causes like AIDS Walk San Francisco, Bio-Rad employees love the opportunity to step up and lend a hand to those in need. Our employees can be seen in action in our recent stories on the Tour de Cure in support of the American Diabetes Assocation and Bio-Rad employees volunteering their time at a local food bank.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 15

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King is well known for advancing civil rights for people of color in the United States through the use of nonviolent resistance and nonviolent civil disobedience. Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday that lands on the third Monday of January, roughly around the time of King's actual birthday. International Holocaust Remembrance Day: Jan. 27

The United Nations General Assembly officially designated January 27 as International Holocaust Remembrance Day on November 1, 2005. Every year on this day, people around the world are encouraged to honor those lost during the holocaust and remember the Nazi’s act of genocide to ensure that nothing like it ever happens again. The world of engineering is not always an easy career path for women to navigate. Female engineers often spearhead innovative and impactful work, but this sometimes means being the only woman in the room.

Following your passion and having a support system are both key to being successful — but what else can help you along your career path as a woman engineer? To find out, we spoke with women engineers at Bio-Rad and asked them what career advice they would give to others.

Be willing to explore new ideas and have that passion to step out of the box. Be solid. Be curious. Be consistent. Don't be afraid to make mistakes; you grow from them and they help make you a better engineer.

You never know what a simple hello could do for you. Being humble and making connections with everyone you meet is vital to success because you might need their help with something in the future.

If you’re in high school and want to pursue engineering, volunteer at a museum, look up summer internships, or join a robotics team. If you’re a college student, talk to other peers and join student organizations that can give you leadership experience, or look for other resources on campus that offer career development. If you’re a recent grad with a new job, always reach out to colleagues and learn from their experiences!

Black History Month: All February

Black History Month is an annual celebration of achievements by African Americans and a time for recognizing their central role in U.S. history. Since 1976, every U.S. president has designated the month of February as Black History Month, with other countries like Canada and the United Kingdom also devoting a month to celebrating Black History. The Black History Month 2024 theme, “African Americans and the Arts,” explores the key influence African Americans have had in the fields of "visual and performing arts, literature, fashion, folklore, language, film, music, architecture, culinary and other forms of cultural expression."

Lunar New Year: February 10 - 24

Over a billion people around the world will celebrate Lunar New Year from February 10-24. The start of the holiday coincides with the date of the new moon, at 6:59 a.m. on February 10 in Beijing (5:59 p.m. on February 9 in New York City). The Lunar New Year is a time to honor deities and ancestors and to be with family. 2024 is the Year of the Dragon, and celebrations will culminate with the Lantern Festival on February 24. International Day of Women and Girls in Science: February 11

Every year, the International Day of Women and Girls in Science seeks to promote full and equal access for women and girls in science. It's also a day to recognize the role that women and girls play in science and technology. While there are not as many women as men in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math (STEM) industries, interest is growing and women and girls are doing amazing work that should be celebrated! National Donor Day: February 14

National Donor Day is a time to focus on all types of donation (including organ, eye, tissue, platelets, and marrow) by participating in blood/marrow drives or donor registration events either on this day or at any point throughout the year. Presidents Day: February 19

Every year, March is reserved for Women’s History Month—a month dedicated to honoring women’s contributions in US history. International Women's Day is also celebrated each year on March 8. To recognize and celebrate both events this year, we asked Bio-Rad managers to tell us about a woman they work with who embraces this year's theme of "Inspire Inclusion."

The response from our managers was overwhelming, so we have decided to feature all of the women nominated in three different posts along with the words from those who nominated them. This is our first post, and we will have two more before the end of the month!

How to Avoid Recruiting Scams

They say if something sounds too good to be true, it probably is. While this is a critical “first line of defense” when combating online job scams, there are other things job candidates should keep in mind to avoid falling victim to recruiting scams.

Bio-Rad and other employers periodically receive reports of individuals posing as company recruiters. These fake "recruiters" seek to obtain information from applicants, including personal and financial information. If the cyber criminals obtain the right information, the losses to job seekers are often very painful.

Here are some key things to help you remain vigilant and avoid job scams:

Communication Matters: While recruiters often use LinkedIn messaging for reaching out to prospective job candidates, interviews are rarely (if ever) held via text, instant message, or email. Don't be afraid to request a phone or in-person interview!
Double Check Details: Beware of inconsistent details about the role or hiring company, and ensure the link directs you to a legitimate company site and not a spoofed version.
Check Out The Recruiter: You should also scan the recruiter’s LinkedIn profile to make sure it seems legit. If there aren’t many details or the person only has a few followers, something could be amiss. You can also confirm the recruiter's email format with the company's general email pattern (for Bio-Rad, email addresses end in @bio-rad.com).
Never Pay Upfront: A legitimate job will never ask you to pay for things like background checks, training, or equipment before starting a new position. Avoid “recruiters” who offer to send a payment for these types of things. Be wary if asked for personal or financial details like your driver’s license, Social Security number, or banking info.

Feel like you’re being scammed? When in doubt, call the company to verify the recruiter's identity and the job role. You can also report scams to both the FTC and FBI (in the US) or to the appropriate agency for your country or region. Lastly, contact your financial institution immediately if you've fallen prey to a scammer and shared sensitive info or money.

In addition to our advice here, the Federal Trade Commission (FTC) has a page dedicated to these type of scams. You can also find more information on LinkedIn, an active channel for these types of scams.

Employees from our Dubai office represent 13 different nationalities, and to celebrate their diversity, the team often comes together to try different cuisines. The team calls these meals "World Around the Table," and they provide employees the perfect opportunity to learn more about each other while enjoying delicious food from their coworkers' home countries.

The World Around the Table is really important for the people working here in the Dubai office because it's a way, at least monthly, for us to be all together around the table. The goal is to, as we have so many countries here, so many nationalities, to have food from one of the countries.

It’s been said that every second counts when faced with an emergency. This was certainly the case for one of Bio-Rad's on-site Emergency Response Teams, whose swift actions helped save a life during a recent medical emergency.

The tense moment arrived when a Bio-Rad vendor visiting one of the Company's manufacturing facilities in Northern California collapsed in a hallway outside of a conference room. The visitor was motionless, unresponsive, and without a discernible pulse.

Several nearby Bio-Rad employees quickly called in the local Bio-Rad Emergency Response Team (ERT), who rushed to the scene in less than a minute and immediately commenced CPR, while site leadership dialed 911.

After several minutes of continuous chest compressions, the patient resumed breathing and eventually regained consciousness before being transported to a local hospital.

Stephen Quashnick, an environmental health and safety specialist for Bio-Rad, says many of the employees involved were trained for this type of emergency as part of the local ERT, and a few have previous medical experience that was instrumental during the event. “Bio-Rad ERTs can use any of your previous skills in a number of ways, and in this case, individuals’ prior medical training was very important,” Stephen says.

In the end, the focused efforts and highly coordinated actions of Bio-Rad employees working together contributed to a positive outcome. “ERT Teams and other people not involved with the ERT were all integral in saving this life,” Stephen says. “It truly takes a team and a village.”

This May, Bio-Rad joins the nation in celebrating Military Appreciation Month. We are grateful for this opportunity to recognize the courage and dedication of our veterans and active service members who have bravely served our country.

We're especially proud to highlight one of our employees, Joe Davis. Joe is a Bio-Rad Regional Sales Manager who previously served as an FMF Corpsman stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC with the prestigious 2nd Marine Division.

To recognize Joe, as well as so many men and women like him who have served, we asked Joe to tell us about his time serving and why this month of appreciation is so important.

I grew up in a family who has served in every major conflict since the Civil War. I always knew serving was a good option for a rowdy kid not ready for college. I served four years as an FMF Corpsman Stationed at Camp Lejeune, NC with the 2nd Marine Division. I deployed twice, once with the 22 Marine Expeditionary Unit where we participated in Operation Sharp Edge to secure our Embassy in Liberia, Africa. We evacuated about 1,500 US and NATO noncombatants out of that war-torn country. My second deployment was with the 2nd Light Armored Infantry Battalion to the Persian Gulf during Operation Desert Shield and Storm.

Joining the military was probably the best decision I could have made; it gave me the opportunity to see the world, grow up and then go to college on the GI Bill with a very different perspective on life.

Those men and women that raise their right hand and swear an oath become part of that special family. Currently less than 1% of US adults are serving on active duty. These men and women and their families deserve the utmost respect, appreciation and gratitude. In 1999, Congress named May as US Military Appreciation Month, so take a minute and say THANK YOU to an Active Member, Veteran or Family Member.

Currently it is estimated that 41,000 veterans are homeless, and 22 veterans commit suicide every day. We should do better and help those who gave so much.

Bio-Rad Recognizes Mental Health Awareness Week

Bio-Rad recently held a weeklong series of events to recognize Mental Health Awareness Week, observed during Mental Health Awareness Month each May. Leveraging the 2024 theme, “Movement: moving more for our mental health”, employees walked together outside, learned about the mind-boosting power of movement from mind-body experts, and heard Bio-Rad leaders discuss the importance of prioritizing our mental health.

Employees were also encouraged to "Be Seen in Green" during the week and submit a picture as part of a giveaway. If you're wondering why, green is the international symbol for mental health awareness! Some of the pictures received are shown throughout this article.

Interview with our Mental Health Employee Resource Group (ERG)

For the last three years, Mental Health Awareness Week events have been planned and organized by Bio-Rad's Mental Health Employee Resource Group (ERG), which promotes employee wellbeing at Bio-Rad. To learn more about the importance of Mental Health Awareness Week and creating a culture of support and acceptance, we spoke with Lindsay Schwartz, an HR Business Partner for Bio-Rad who co-leads the Mental Health ERG.

Why is it important for Bio-Rad to recognize Mental Health Awareness Week and to engage employees through these events?
Bio-Rad’s mission is to advance science and save lives, together. What better way to live our values than to demonstrate our commitment to supporting the wellbeing of our employees. By engaging in events throughout the week we can help raise awareness, reduce stigma and promote a culture of openness and support.

What other things does Bio-Rad's Mental Health ERG do for Bio-Rad employees?
The goal of our ERG is to promote employee wellbeing and to create a safe community where employees can come together to reduce the stigma of mental health, raise awareness, create a culture of acceptance, provide resources and support one another. We engage in panel discussions and educational opportunities often and bring awareness to an abundance of resources.

Are there any external resources that you'd recommend to those reading?
My top three most helpful external resources are:

Mental Health America
Why I love it: they offer an annual toolkit with a calendar of activities to do throughout the month. Not only do they offer resources to help others and yourself but they provide helpful tools such as building your coping toolbox and things to say when you're not fine. It also provides resources for those supporting people who are experiencing mental health conditions.

National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI)
Why I love it: they have great podcasts and webinars, as well as good descriptors of mental health conditions.

Born this Way Foundation
Why I love it: Lots of resources to find support and involvement. They also offer a “Be There Certificate” which allows you to get a deeper understanding of mental health and get involved in supporting others. This one is a great resources for teens.

What is one takeaway from this week that you would give to people who may be going through mental health struggles or just want to better prioritize their mental health?
The one takeaway I would love everyone to walk away with this month is, “You are not alone!” There is a community of support out there who are kind, helpful and offer a listening ear. Call them! You deserve support in your mental health journey.

Bio-Rad Hosts Local 7th Graders for “Genes in a Bottle” Experiment

Bio-Rad's Community Involvement team and our Science Ambassadors Program recently invited local 7th graders to visit our corporate headquarters in Hercules, California. The students, who attend nearby St. Patrick's School, toured different areas of the campus, learned about science careers, and conducted Bio-Rad's popular "Genes in a Bottle" experiment.

Events like this one provide opportunities for local youth to learn about science and engineering at an early age, which the National Science Teachers Association says can help create an increased interest and aptitude for learning about these subjects later in life. For one employee who was involved in the event, this is what it’s all about.

“Exposing our local youth to careers in science and opportunities to learn science not only opens their eyes to the world of scientific discovery and innovation, but it also lays the groundwork for a skilled and diverse workforce in the future,” says Victoria Escalada, a legal operations analyst for Bio-Rad.

“By engaging these students, we can ignite a passion that may lead them to pursue careers in fields that are critical to our global community.”

After touring a production area and a research lab, students learned about Bio-Rad's history and then listened to different employees speak about their career journeys. The students finished the day with Bio-Rad's Genes in a Bottle activity, where they extracted DNA from their cheek cells with a real-world method and then bottled it in a keepsake necklace.

Local Connection

Prior to joining Bio-Rad, Victoria worked at St. Patrick School and says she has kept in touch with many of the teachers and students she interacted with there. “A science teacher from St. Patrick School recently approached me to discuss potential on-site science learning opportunities at Bio-Rad for her students—many of whom live close to Bio-Rad and come from diverse backgrounds,” she says.

“The first time I heard about Bio-Rad was when I worked at St. Patrick School, and a scientist from Bio-Rad came to my classroom and did the Genes in a Bottle Experiment,” Victoria says. “What is amazing about that experience was that many of my former students in that class currently cite that same Bio-Rad experience being one of the reasons they are currently pursuing their college studies in STEM! It also sparked my interest in applying to Bio-Rad when I decided it was my time to leave the education industry.”

Victoria’s story highlights the essence and importance of Bio-Rad's continued efforts to expose our local youth to careers in STEM, regardless of what area of study they choose to pursue. Through events like this one and our annual college scholarship programs, Bio-Rad is proud to play a role in helping our future workforce discover the many career paths available to them.

Video: Bio-Rad Kicks Off Summer BBQ Series

Bio-Rad employees recently enjoyed a "backyard BBQ" at the Company's corporate headquarters in Hercules, California. On the menu were hamburgers, hot dogs and fresh made pie, and tunes were provided by a Bio-Rad employee who moonlights as a DJ. Lawn games and beautiful views of the bay made for a truly unique event.

The event was the first of four Summer BBQs that will be held between June and September. The remaining BBQs will feature different world BBQ cuisines and some fun surprises for everyone who attends. To see a timelapse from the patio of our first BBQ, check out the video below!

A team of more than 40 Bio-Rad employees, friends and family converged on Golden Gate Park on Sunday, July 21 for AIDS Walk San Francisco, a worthy cause tied directly to Bio-Rad's products and mission. In total, our team has raised more than $30,000 through a sponsorship and fundraising totaling nearly $7,000.

To learn more about Bio-Rad's longstanding participation in AIDS Walk San Francisco, we spoke with our team captain Melissa Eng and Jim Barry, who heads Bio-Rad's Life Science Group.

Melissa Eng, Senior Director, Global HR

How many years have you been participating at AIDS Walk, and how many years have you served as captain?

"I organized our first team in 2005, and I have participated every year since. This year was our 18th AIDS Walk, and I've served as captain for 13 years."

Why do you feel it's important for Bio-Rad to sponsor the event and assemble a team?

"I believe it's important for Bio-Rad to provide sponsorship for the AIDS Walk and assemble a team to show that as an organization, we're committed to helping support and give back to the communities we are a part of. Additionally, we like to focus our community involvement events in areas where we have a connection to our business and products, and our product portfolio includes testing for HIV."

What is your favorite part about the event?

"My favorite part of the event is seeing employees and their families participate, especially if they also bring their four-legged family members! After the event, I also like hearing what a great time employees have had, spending time with family and friends walking for a great cause."

Why do you feel it's important for Bio-Rad to participate in AIDS Walk every year?

"I think it is very important for Bio-Rad to participate in the AIDS Walk because it reflects our company mission to advance science and save lives, together. By participating, we are able to show our solidarity and commitment to the fight against HIV/AIDS, and help raise awareness and funds for research, education and prevention."

Why did you choose to walk?

"Personally, I saw the walk as an opportunity to join the community to walk and raise money to further the cause. I am so proud of the fact that Bio-Rad has been participating for 18 years. It was a great chance to do some service in the community, share the experience with my family and enjoy a very large group walk through a beautiful park. I hope to see more of the team with us next year!"

Inaugural Leadership Program Helps Grow Exceptional Leadership at Bio-Rad

Earlier this summer, a class of 30 Bio-Rad leaders graduated from the Company’s newly launched Leadership Development Program, which provides leadership training and professional growth opportunities to leaders across Bio-Rad's global teams.

“We created this program to strengthen the culture and capabilities of our leaders, which will help the Company achieve its strategic objectives while better integrating our mission, vision and values into our work culture,” says Patsy Kennedy, Sr. Director, Global Talent Development and D&I, Global HR, Bio-Rad.

The Program was an intensive six-month cohort-based experience in which participants worked on a strategic project together with an executive sponsor.

As part of each residency, participants had the opportunity to discuss, observe, reflect and try new learnings in a group setting. Leadership concepts were explored through case studies, storytelling, interactive learning and digital tools, and facilitated by world class leadership consultants and coaches.

“What people really loved the most was the fact that each had an executive coach that was present and provided feedback throughout the program. Most importantly, the graduates are asked to 'pay it forward' by serving as ambassadors to the Program and as mentors and coaches for future nominees and additional cohorts.”

The Leadership Development Program was created as an extension of the Bio-Rad Learning Academy, which was launched in 2022 to give all employees the opportunity to learn, grow and develop around a shared set of critical business skills. Bio-Rad Receives “Green” My Green Lab Certification

Bio-Rad is proud to announce that our Life Science labs in Pleasanton, California have received a My Green Lab Certification, joining four other labs at Bio-Rad with a certification. My Green Lab Certification is considered the "gold standard" for laboratory sustainability best practices around the world.

The effort to obtain the certification was led by Gail Higginbotham, a NorCal Site Operations Manager, and her operations team, including Zack Wiegel and Ken Sim. Zack is a lab manager at the site and says the certification reflects the Company’s sustainability goals. “This was a very important initiative for us because it connects to our core value of sustainability, and it enables everyone in our labs to take an active role in reducing our environmental footprint.”

After receiving a rating in the 50% range on the assessment from My Green Lab earlier this year, the Operations Team began exploring ways to expand their existing sustainability initiatives and educate coworkers about the improvements. "After receiving the initial rating," Zack says, "Gail drafted up a plan with Ken and myself to make Pleasanton more sustainable and educate our teams about how they could help."

Efforts included the launch of a glove recyling program, bolstering the labs’ waste management, changing the freezer temperature from –80 degrees Celsius to –70, installing occupancy light sensors, and even changing sink aerators to ensure water is used efficiently. The culmination of these efforts was a new rating of 83% for the lab in August, which landed Bio-Rad the Green level certification (levels go Bronze, Silver, Gold, Platinum and Green).

Zack and Ken were also able to glean best practices from Bio-Rad's Clinical Diagnostics Group (CDG), which sits above the Life Science labs and is also My Green Labs certified. "The CDG group was great to bounce ideas off of because they actually went through the implementations first,” Zack says. “It was nice to work on it together and have kind of a playbook to base our efforts around."

Several members of Bio-Rad's Human Resources Team in the US and countries in the Company's Asia Pacific region recently visted Bio-Rad's Seoul, Korea office for a four-day visit. During the visit, the teams enjoyed the opportunity to meet in person for various team-building activities both on- and off-site, a cross-cultural intelligence workshop, and a luncheon with our Korean employees.

Bio-Rad recently held a Global IT Expo at our headquarters in Hercules, California, where our IT Teams highlighted Bio-Rad's cutting-edge technology, achievements, and future vision. A number of Bio-Rad vendors were also present, including Microsoft, SAP, Salesforce, Amazon, and IBM.

Today, on Veterans' Day, we extend our deepest gratitude to our country's veterans, including Sonya Sano, Troy Clement, and Sarah Ozment, three valued members of the Bio-Rad family who have honorably served our nation. Their hard work and dedication to our country inspire us all. We thank them and all of our Bio-Rad veterans for their service.

To honor our veterans, we asked Sonya, Troy, and Sarah to tell us a bit about their experience in the military. These are their stories.

Sonya Sano

Travel Support Team, Air Force

When I joined the Air Force in 1981, I was at a crossroads in life. College didn’t feel like the right path for me, and job opportunities were limited. I wasn’t sure what to do, but after speaking with a recruiter, I made a decision that would change my life forever.

For eight years, I served in the Air Force as part of the travel support team, helping those on temporary assignments. I didn’t realize at the time how much this experience would shape me—not just professionally, but personally. The Air Force didn’t just provide me with skills and discipline; it helped me grow into a stronger, more confident person.

For me, Veterans Day is a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by service members and honor those who gave everything for our country. It’s a day to pay tribute to my fellow veterans and especially to my stepfather, who served in the Vietnam War.The experience changed my life in ways I never expected, and I carry the lessons I learned with me every day.

Troy Clement

Facilities Operations Manager, GSC

Civil Engineering Officer, Air Force

I served in the Air Force as a Civil Engineering officer assigned to various duty stations overseas and in the US, as well as being deployed to the Middle East. My time in the military taught me the value of service to my country, dedication to the mission, accountability, and an appreciation of the world's diversity. It also instilled in me that the efforts of all contribute to and determine the level of success from the lowest ranking through top leadership. Most of all, I gained a sense of pride to have taken my place alongside family members who have served during war and peacetime from the Civil War to today.

Sarah Ozment

Account Manager III, GCO

Medical Laboratory, Army

I grew up in a military family. My Dad was a Marine Corps helicopter pilot. He went through college on a Navy ROTC scholarship. I followed in my father’s footsteps and applied for an ROTC scholarship at Auburn University. I figured I would serve my four years and then get out. Little did I know.

In the Army I was a Medical Laboratory Officer—medical technologist by degree and training. I spent 10 years in the Army serving at various facilities in Alabama, Virginia, and San Antonio, Texas.

Due to life circumstances, I ended up getting off active duty after 10 years but remained in the Army reserves. I was doing lab sales at Brooks Air Force Base in San Antonio and was told they had opening for Lab Officers, so I applied and was able to transition from the Army Reserves onto active-duty Air Force. I spent most of those 10 years at the Brooks AFB Epi Lab and the AF Drug Testing Lab. I retired in 2005 after 20 years as a Lt Col.

I now have a daughter who is active-duty Navy since she wanted to go out of state to college and needed a way to pay that out of state tuition—yes, she went to Auburn as well. So I am proud the tradition carries on. And I’m sure my dad would be very proud of her as well.

Hanukkah: December 25-January 2

The Hanukkah story, which we commemorate each year on the 8-day festival of Hanukkah (Chanukah), is one of light over darkness. It celebrates the victory of the Maccabees, Jewish freedom fighters, who routed the Syrian-Greeks from the Holy Land and restored the Temple service. Kwanzaa was founded in 1966 by Dr. Maulana Karenga as a way to honor African culture and heritage. Denmark Employees Put Together Christmas Gifts for Hospitalized Children

Employees from Bio-Rad Denmark recently partnered with a local Danish organization to put together gifts for children that will be distributed in local hospitals this Christmas. The organization, the SMILE Foundation (or SMIL Fonden in Denmark), aims to improve the lives of hospitalized children and their families through various social activities inside and outside of hospitals.

"We partnered with SMILE because they are small and rely a lot on volunteers, and because they support children with rare diseases,” says Gunnar Klitgaard, a Sales Manager in Denmark. “This is very much in line with what we focus on at Bio-Rad, as many of our products support the diagnosis and treatment of disease.”

During the volunteering activity, a team of six employees from Bio-Rad unpacked and repacked toys together, including Lego sets and activity books, that will be distributed to children in local hospitals during the holidays.

Vinni Woldger, sales manager for Bio-Rad Denmark, shares a laugh during the activity.

Birgit Lollike-Olsen, a fellow Sales Manager in Denmark, also helped organize the event and says it provided an opportunity for employees in Denmark, who are all field-based, to continue their partnership with local hospitals that they work with.

“We sell products to a lot of hospitals in the area, so in that aspect, we felt that it was a chance to come full circle and help this organization in a meaningful way during the holidays," Birgit says.

Gunnar says the team enjoyed the chance to get together in person while giving back to their community. “This was an opportunity for us to do something to support a local organization together,” says Gunnar. “Bringing a smile to some children’s faces was really beneficial for myself, and I'm sure the entire team as well.”

Birgit says that the team is already planning to volunteer again next year. “We have discussed this with the organization and will maybe volunteer during the summer when they have activities for the children outside the hospital,” she says. “They make a lot of effort to get them outside, even for a day, to help the children forget they are sick.”

Bio-Rad Team in Shanghai Completes “Corporate Challenge”

Bio-Rad's Life Science R&D team in Shanghai, China recently participated in the JP Morgan Corporate Challenge, a run to bring corporate teams together around teamwork and fundraising. In total, 10 employees completed the 3.5-mile run!

Liz Zhang, HR generalist for Bio-Rad, says the event provides a much-needed break from the day-to-day demands of developing new products for the life science market. “We believe working as a team reduces stress and increases job satisfaction,” she says. “We also value social responsibility and giving back to the community, as dedicating time to help others also fosters engagement amongst our team.”

In addition to running the corporate challenge for the last two years, the Life Science R&D team of roughly 50 Bio-Rad employees also has a badminton club and an annual ping-pong tournament. Liz says events like this help build camaraderie and trust throughout the team, which leads to better work outcomes.

“In our R&D site, we see that people are more likely to take calculated risks that lead to innovation if there’s support from the team behind them,” Liz says. “We hope that there'll be more participants next year,” she says. “The event is held worldwide in 16 locations, including areas that has Bio-Rad offices like San Francisco and Singapore.

“We look forward to seeing more Bio-Radians celebrating teamwork next year!”

St. Sebastian's Day: January 20 (Brazil)

The residents of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil are very devoted to the patron of the city—Saint Sebastian and annually celebrate his holiday on the 20th of January with big festive processions. Interestingly, the holiday is observed not only by Catholics but also by followers of the Candomblé and Umbanda religions, where Saint Sebastian is revered as Oxóssi. To learn more, click here.

Robbie Burns Day: January 25 (Canada)

Robbie Burns Day celebrates the national poet of Scotland, Robert Burns, who was born on January 25, 1759. It’s commemorated in Vancouver with Scottish music, food, and festivities. To learn more, click here.

International Holocaust Remembrance Day: January 27

During the Holocaust, from 1941 to 1945, Nazi Germany murdered roughly two-thirds of Europe’s Jewish population. Since 2005, each year on January 27 International Holocaust Remembrance Day is held to honor the vitcims and remember the Nazi’s act of genocide so that no one else will suffer like that again. Lunar New Year: January 29

The Lunar New Year in 2025 welcomes the Year of the Snake, according to the Chinese lunar calendar. Celebrated by millions around the world, this is a time for cultural traditions, family reunions, and hopes for good fortune in the coming year. The event is celebrated by numerous cultures in various ways at diverse dates (January 29 is the start of the 16-day festival based on the Chinese lunar calendar). Lunar calendars follow the lunar phase while lunisolar calendars follow both the lunar phase and the time of the solar year.

Bio-Rad France Completes Step Challenge and Cancer Fundraiser

At Bio-Rad, commitment to important causes is part of our DNA. Bio-Rad employees in France recently participated in the Race of Lights Step Challenge, a national event which brings together companies to tackle sedentary lifestyles and raise funds for cancer treatment and prevention.

In total, 197 Bio-Rad employees participated across 35 teams created for the event, each proudly named after a Bio-Rad product. From November 15-24, the employees took nearly 15 million steps, or approximately 11,000 kilometers, which is the equivalent of walking from Paris to Beijing!

Giving Back

In addition to the health benefits enjoyed by those who walked, the challenge also enabled us to contribute to a worthy cause. Bio-Rad donated 1,000 euros (a little over $1,000 US dollars) to the Cami Sport et Santé association, which supports cancer patients through therapeutic physical activity. Together, the participating companies raised a total of 350,000 euros in donations for various associations.

"I participated in the Race of Lights Step Challenge for several reasons,” said Magali Brossier, a product support specialist. “This initiative highlights core values like solidarity and support for charitable organizations, which deeply resonate with me. It was also a great way to encourage myself to stay active, especially alongside my colleagues, in a work environment where I’m not very physically active.”

A Team Victory

Bio-Rad also distinguished itself against the 13 participating companies:

2nd place for average number of steps per participant
1st place for total steps accumulated, thanks to the exceptional mobilization of our teams

Mexican National Flag Day: February 24 (Mexico)

The Mexican national flag is a symbol of freedom, justice, and citizenship. Its shield and colors represent the origins, principles, courage, and struggle of the Mexican nation. On February 24, 1935, Benito Ramirez an employee of the Bank of Mexico, organized a guard of honor in tribute to the Flag of Mexico and this practice continued until 1940, when President Lázaro Cárdenas declared that February 24 was officially Flag Day. Carnaval: February 28 – March 8 (Brazil)

The history of Carnival in Brazil is quite intriguing, with the first pre Lent carnivals happening in Italy. Carnival came from the word Carne Vale which translates to ‘Goodbye to Meat”. Ramadan: February 28 – March 29 (EMEA)

Muslims traditionally use a lunar calendar, so Ramadan occurs approximately 11 days earlier each year. In 2025, Ramadan will most likely begin on the evening of February 28, meaning the first full day of the Holy Month could be March 1. However, this start date depends on the sighting of the new crescent moon, usually established by the UAE’s special moon-sighting committee on the night itself. Through our decades-long commitment to science education, Bio-Rad has been proud to play a role in helping build tomorrow’s workforce of scientists, engineers, and innovators. As part of this commitment, Bio-Rad has provided annual college scholarships to students in our local communities since 2003.

“Serving the community has always been a major priority for Bio-Rad,” says Eliza Zoffada, corporate events program manager for Bio-Rad. “The Bio-Rad Scholarship Program provides financial assistance to local, graduating high school students so that they can pursue careers in science or engineering,” says Eliza.

Bio-Rad Employee Gives Back at Contra Costa Science & Engineering Fair

This March, Bio-Rad continued its longtime sponsorship of the Contra Costa Science & Engineering Fair in Pittsburg, California. For the last four years, Bio-Rad employee JR Hernaez has been a judge at the fair, and his involvement with the competition stems all the way back to his sophomore year of high school.

“I participated in the first Contra Costa Science and Engineering Fair in 2006 and was the first Grand Prize Recipient of the fair,” JR says. “Bio-Rad was a founding member of the fair and continues to be a primary sponsor until this day. Because of Bio-Rad's commitment to sponsoring the science fair, I feel that Bio-Rad indirectly contributed to my success at that early age, which I am very grateful for.”

After the competition, JR became a finalist at the California State Science Fair and the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair before earning a Bachelor of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology and a Master of Business Administration from UC Davis. Today, he is the Global Product Manager for Bio-Rad's Gene Expression Business, managing Bio-Rad's conventional PCR thermal cyclers and the nucleic acid gel electrophoresis product portfolios.

“This experience was definitely a steppingstone in my career,” JR says. “The experience gave me confidence in communication and helped with critical thinking and problem-solving skills.”

As a chief judge for the Biological Sciences category since 2023, JR says he continues to volunteer as a way to support the future generation of scientists. “It’s important for me to give back in this manner because I was in the same position as these young scientists 20 years ago,” he says. “There were roughly 300 students who participated, which is a hundred more students than last year...This really shows the commitment by a lot of students in STEM.”

JR says he is living proof that Bio-Rad's support of STEM students and science education is paying dividends in the real world. “I am a product of Bio-Rad's commitment to the local community," he says, "which shows how important it is to invest in the young leaders of tomorrow.”

Tiradentes’ Day: April 21 (Brazil)

Vimy Ridge Day: April 9 (Canada)

The Battle of Vimy Ridge began on Easter morning 1917. Sant Jordi, known as Saint George in English, is a special festivity celebrated each year on April 23 in Spain and other countries. On this day, locals celebrate love and literature (sort of like Valentine's Day).

For a little fun outside of their day-to-day work, a group of Bio-Rad employees recently held a game night at our headquarters in Hercules, California. Based on the video below, the team had a great time!

Aubrey Cox, a marketing manager in Bio-Rad's Clinical Diagnostics Group, says the event provided him and other colleagues the opportunity to catch up with one another in a fun setting.

"We work hard here at Bio-Rad. We have a lot of projects, lots of deadlines, those kinds of things. This is a chance to do something together with your coworkers that's not related to a project or a deadline, and just a chance to have some fun."

Bio-Rad is excited to announce the relaunch of our Summer Internship Program, which will run from June 16 to August 15, 2025! Internships at Bio-Rad provide a structured program for college students with competitive compensation and opportunities to grow both personally and professionally.

Past Bio-Rad interns talk about their experiences working at Bio-Rad.

Joseph Santos, a Recruiting Operations Lead for Bio-Rad, says the Internship Program is a great opportunity for college students looking for real-world experience and the chance to make professional connections.

“One of the biggest positives is being able to build connections naturally within the Bio-Rad ecosystem,” Joseph says. “Being able to connect and build relationships with managers is huge, not only during the program, but hopefully down the road keeping in touch with them, and applying here once they graduate.”

Joseph says the program also provides interns with the opportunity to work on exciting projects across different departments and disciplines. “At the end of the program, we will ask the interns to present to senior management, where they can share what they worked on, their key takeaways from the program, and what they hope to do in the future.”

Requirements for the Bio-Rad Internship Program include being a sophomore or junior at a four-year college and maintaining a minimum GPA of 3.0 or higher.

As the kids get older and have their own lives, it's nice to have everyone together. This was from 2021 and it's still a favorite photo. It includes my husband, 3 kids, a daughter-in-law and a bonus daughter.

A class of 30 Bio-Rad leaders recently met at Bio-Rad’s Hercules, California headquarters for the launch of this year’s Leadership Development Program. Now in its second year, the program provides leadership training and professional growth opportunities to leaders across Bio-Rad’s global teams.

At the heart of the program are five critical business challenges that participants must attempt to solve within dynamic, cross-functional teams. Together, each team must research, analyze, and make recommendations to senior leadership on how best to address the challenge.

“What’s unique about the program is that leaders are deliberately put into a project where they’re not the subject matter expert,” says Patsy Kennedy, Senior Director, Global Talent Development and leader for the program. “The richness of the learning comes in how the leaders deal with ambiguity when they are faced with a problem and have to find their way through it together.”

In the video below, two participants talk about their experiences beginning the program and meeting their teams during the first "residency" held in May of this year.

The nine-month program will explore a number of leadership concepts through case studies, storytelling, and interactive learning, and each participant also meets with an executive coach for ongoing feedback. The program is also designed to be sustainable by creating strong leaders who will mentor the next generation of leaders.

“The other thing I love is that everyone who goes through the program is expected to pay it forward," says Patsy. "There is a kind of a 'give back' element, as the 2024 graduates are now mentoring the 2025 participants, and the 2025 participants will be mentoring to the 2026 class next year."

St. Jean Baptiste Day (St. John the Baptist): June 24 (Canada)

Saint Jean Baptiste Day is celebrated every year on June 24 as the days of the year stretch to their longest. June 24 coincides with the summer solstice, or midsummer (see above!). Taken over by the Christian Church as a religious holiday to celebrate the birth of Saint John the Baptist, this tradition grew deep roots in metropolitan France before finding its way to New France, where colonial archives refer to spectacular nighttime bonfires around which local libations flowed. Bio-Rad Employees Make Impact at Paris Heroes Race

At Bio-Rad, we are committed to supporting various causes that impact our local communities around the world. This year, our France sites in Gémenos, Marnes-la-Coquette, Mitry-Mory, and Steenvoorde are rallying around a number of local charity races, including the Course des Héros Paris (Paris Heroes Race).

The Course des Héros Paris 2025

The starting gun was fired at 10 a.m. on June 15 at the Parc de Saint-Cloud in Paris, with 18 Bio-Rad employees from Marnes-la-Coquette and Mitry-Mory taking part. The Course des Héros Paris is an inter-company solidarity challenge benefitting local hospitals in the Paris area. The event included a 5K walk or run, without timing, in a friendly atmosphere accessible to all.

Charline Henry, an International Instrumentation Specialist for Bio-Rad, says she participated in the race to help support an important cause with her colleagues. “The Course des Héros is much more than a 5K race — it's an opportunity to get some exercise for a cause we care about, in a great atmosphere!” says Charline. “Running to save lives gives meaning to every step. And sharing this moment with colleagues brings us closer together, lifts our spirits and, honestly, it feels good!”

The Course des Héros Paris 2025 saw:

More than 5,400 participants
More than 200 companies and associations mobilized
1,250,000 Euros in donations collected (approximately $1,469,879 US Dollars)

A real charitable act

Thanks to our employees’ hard work, Bio-Rad donated 500 Euros to the Centre Hospitalier des 4 Villes (CH4V), which includes the hospitals of Saint-Cloud, Sèvres, Chaville, and Ville-d'Avray. This contribution will help improve the daily lives of healthcare workers, the quality of care, and support innovation initiatives and training.

Well done and thank you to all the participants for their commitment, enthusiasm, and team spirit.

International Youth Day: August 12

Obon Festival: August 13-16

A major Buddhist event in Japan, Obon honors the spirits of ancestors returning to visit their families. Widely celebrated across Japan, it includes ancestral rituals, Bon Odori dances, and floating lanterns to guide spirits back to the afterlife. It is one of Japan’s most important cultural and religious festivals, symbolizing respect for family heritage and the cyclical nature of life and death. On July 20, Bio-Rad continued its longstanding support of AIDS Walk San Francisco, as more than 40 employees, friends, and family showed up for this important cause tied to Bio-Rad's products and mission.

With our amazing team raising over $3,750 this year, Bio-Rad teams have raised more than $285,000 since we began participating in AIDS Walk SF in 2005. Bio-Rad has also been a principal sponsor for several years, donating an additional $25,000 to AIDS Walk in 2025 alone.

To learn more about the impact we've made over the last 20 years, we spoke with Team Captain Melissa Eng, a Senior Director for Bio-Rad's Global HR Team.

What aspects of AIDS Walk align with Bio-Rad's mission of advancing science and saving lives, and why is it important for Bio-Rad to continue annual sponsorship and fundraising?

Bio-Rad’s continued support of the San Francisco AIDS Walk reflects our deep commitment to science, community, and compassion. Since 2005, we’ve proudly stood alongside thousands of participants and beneficiaries, raising tens of thousands of dollars to support critical HIV/AIDS services across the Bay Area. The AIDS Walk supports 18 beneficiaries across the Bay Area, funding services for people living with HIV/AIDS, prevention programs, and advocacy efforts, and Bio-Rad's sponsorship helps sustain these vital services, making a real difference in the lives of thousands.

Additionally, Bio-Rad’s participation in the AIDS Walk directly reflects its mission to advance science and save lives. The event is directly aligned to Bio-Rad’s products, particularly our portfolio which includes our HIV testing technologies. Supporting the walk is not just symbolic—it’s a tangible extension of the company’s scientific and humanitarian commitments.

Why do you think Bio-Rad employees continue to show up and support this event?

Do you have a favorite memory from a past AIDS Walk that you can share?

My favorite memory from a past AIDS Walk was in 2011, when we had the largest team participate ever. We had over 100 walkers and also raised over $32,000. This particular year there was so much enthusiasm and willingness to participate - it was incredible.

Every year we have walkers who have not participated previously and each time, I enjoy hearing how much they enjoyed the walk and the experience!

Deeksha Kasula, an Electro-Optical Engineer from UC Berkeley, says that Bio-Rad is filled with people who are happy to share what they know in order to help young employees and interns develop during their time here.

Breast Cancer Awareness: All October

Breast Cancer Awareness Month is an international health campaign that’s held every October. The month aims to promote screening and reduce the risk of the disease, which affects 2.3 million women worldwide. Known best for its pink theme color, the month features a number of campaigns and programs designed to:

support people diagnosed with breast cancer, including those with metastatic breast cancer
educate people about breast cancer risk factors
encourage women to go for regular breast cancer screening starting at age 40 or earlier, depending on personal breast cancer risk
raise money for breast cancer research

Dussehra/Vijayadashami: October 1

Dussehra in Hinduism is a holiday marking the triumph of Rama, an avatar of Vishnu, over the 10-headed demon king Ravana, who abducted Rama’s wife, Sita. Chuseok: October 6

Chuseok, also known as Hangawi, is a major mid-autumn harvest festival and a three-day holiday in South Korea celebrated on the 15th day of the 8th month of the lunisolar calendar on the full moon.

Mid-Autumn (or Mooncake) Festival: October 6

The Mid-Autumn Festival, also known as the Moon Festival or Mooncake Festival, is a harvest festival celebrated in Chinese culture.

During the festival, lanterns of all sizes and shapes – symbolizing beacons that light the path toward prosperity and good fortune for the people – are carried and displayed. Mooncakes, a rich pastry typically filled with sweet-bean or lotus-seed paste, are eaten during this festival. The Mid-Autumn Festival is based on the legend of Chang'e, the Moon goddess in Chinese mythology.

Our Lady of Aparecida’s Day: October 12

Our Lady of Aparecida Day is a public and liturgical holiday celebrated on October 12 in Brazil, honoring the patroness of the country. It commemorates the miraculous discovery of a dark-skinned statue of the Virgin Mary by fishermen in the Paraíba River in 1717, an event seen as a miracle that led to devotion and growth of the shrine that now houses the statue. Canadian Thanksgiving: October 13

Canadian Thanksgiving (French: Jour de l'Action de grâce) is an annual holiday held in Canada on the second Monday in October. As a liturgical festival, Thanksgiving corresponds to the British and continental European harvest festival, with churches decorated with cornucopias, pumpkins, corn, wheat sheaves, and other harvest bounty. While the actual Thanksgiving holiday is on a Monday, Canadians may gather for their feast on any day during the weekend. Diwali: October 20

Diwali or Deepawali, known as the “festival of lights,” is usually celebrated in October or November. Lasting over five days, the holiday is celebrated by millions of Hindus, Jains, and Sikhs worldwide. The name of this festival is derived from ‘avali,’ which means ‘row,’ and ‘deepa,’ meaning “clay lamps.” When merged, these words mean “a row of lights.” For this reason, lights are symbolic of this festival and Indians get a lot of sparklers and fireworks to fuel the inner light that spiritually protects them from the darkness. Singapore Office Holds a “Family Day”

Singapore-based employees recently had the opportunity to participate in a “Family Day” event in which they invited members of their family to Bio-Rad to explore their workplace, play games, and more.

“The team decided to hold this event as we believe families' support is very important for colleagues to give the best to our work,” said HR Manager Patricia Liew.

During the event, 30 children and an additional 15 adult family members toured the office and learned about Bio-Rad, munched on snacks, and enjoyed a few activities – including a murder mystery using Bio-Rad's own Crime Scene Investigator PCR Kit.

“The star of the show was our very own Sherlock Holmes and his team of lab detectives played by Bio-Rad employees!” said Patricia. “It was an afternoon of fun, especially for parents and children. Kudos to our organizers and colleagues for their hard work!”

Food from the Heart

In August, employees from the Singapore office also held a food drive to support local food bank Food from the Heart. The initiative helped raise awareness about food insecurity and encouraged colleagues to donate non-perishable food items to support the less fortunate.

A team of employees also packed and delivered the items to Food from the Heart. Great job, team!

From September 15 to October 15 each year, Bio-Rad joins other Americans in celebrating Hispanic Heritage Month. During this month-long observance, many of our locations in the United States have been holding events to honor the vibrant traditions of Hispanic culture.

We took the following video from one of our recent celebrations at our corporate headquarters in Hercules, California, where employees enjoyed live music, a delicious menu curated by our onsite chef, and sweet treats from a churro cart.

The gathering was a great opportunity for employees to connect with colleagues and celebrate community through food, music, and shared heritage. We can't wait to do it again!

In anticipation of Global Mental Health Day on October 10, we recently asked Bio-Rad employees around the globe to tell us how they take care of their mental health and well-being. Whether it's a go-to routine to help reset after a long day or a simple practice that enables the right balance, taking care of ourselves is crucial to our mental health.

The response from our employees was both overwhelming and inspiring, and we appreciate all of our employees below sharing tricks and tips that have served them well. As we recognize Global Mental Health Day, we encourage you to take a moment to pause and reflect on the importance of caring for ourselves and supporting one another. Which practice below resonates with you?

Vanessa Arizmendi (Mexico City, Mexico)

I care for my mental health by embracing new experiences—learning, trying, and being mindful of first-time moments. Traveling helps me relax by pushing me out of my comfort zone, allowing me to meet new people and gain fresh perspectives, and having my family close is a plus.

Jeffrey Woo (Irvine, California)

I find hobbies that I can be passionate about, even simple hobbies which help me escape the serious issues in life to accomplish some of the more simple tasks. I also find time to spend with my kids, again enjoying some of the simpler aspects of life.

Loreta Vargas (Hercules, California)

I workout for at least 30-45 minutes/day minimum of 5 days/week. Weather permitting, I relax in my pool on off days too.

Sharon Bola (New York)

I care for my mental health by practicing transcendental meditation 2x a day which helps me feel centered and calm. One of my favorite ways to relax is attending sound baths, where the soothing and healing vibrations recharges my spirit.

Sanae Raoui (United Arab Emirates)

I take care of my mental health by setting boundaries with my time and practicing mindfulness when I feel overwhelmed. My favorite ways to relax are reading something inspiring related to life development, going for a walk, or doing some sound healing.

Lina Calmhede (Stockholm, Sweden)

I enjoy a relaxing evening swim while enjoying beautiful scenery of Stockholm city. (Yes, this is downtown Stockholm.)

Xavier Tajonera (Irvine, California)

I alternate between walking and lap swimming during my lunch break. Both activities help me reset for the 2nd half of the day. Golf on the weekends is also a huge mental therapy in preparing me for the coming work week. I have also reduced my food intake by reducing the amount of serving.

Patsy Kennedy (Hercules, California)

I take a 4-mile walk at least 5 days out of the week, with my husband. My daughter will join us sometimes. I also give thanks for a great job, lovely family and a loving marriage each morning. I often times listen to Mel Robbins Podcast as well as randomly selecting a page from "101 Essays That Will Change the Way You Think" for my mental health.

Rohit Regmi (Hercules, California)

I take care of my mental health by setting healthy boundaries, practicing mindfulness, and staying connected with supportive people. My favorite ways to relax are listening to calming music and going for quiet walks in nature.

Eric Parent (Montreal, Canada)

Mostly by meditating a little bit every day. This allows me to detach from all the emotions inside of me and take a step back when a negative emotion strikes me. Also, every time I can, I go take a walk in the woods. Nothing beats that for relaxing the body and the mind.

Swimming is my favorite way to relax. Open water and pool trainings are a good way to be alone with yourself, take care of your own thoughts, and become aware of your strength.

If my mental health is healthy, I can manage both my positive and negative emotions, meaning I'll be balanced. My positive actions will rebuild my strength and foster resilience. This doesn't mean I won't have problems or difficult times, but rather that I will have the ability to cope with them.
• Let's have clear values and purposes to give meaning to our lives.
• Let's congratulate ourselves on our abilities, talents, and gifts that will allow us to project a positive image.
• Our emotional well-being will allow us to have healthy emotional relationships with everyone around us, including friends, family, or others with whom we live daily.
• Resilience is a fundamental pillar for facing adversity and will allow us to recover emotionally in a healthy way. If I take care of myself, I can better take care of others. But above all, we must be confident in asking for help without feeling ashamed of the situation. Accepting that life is NOT perfect is part of our good mental health. We must be prepared for frustration and not let feelings of sadness, anxiety, or stress overcome us, because otherwise, these will serve as an obstacle to enjoying life.

A team of roughly 50 Bio-Rad employees, friends, and family came together for an important cause at the “Light The Night” cancer walk in Walnut Creek, California on October 4. The event is one of several held across the United States by Blood Cancer United (formerly Leukemia & Lymphoma Society) to help fund treatments for patients who are suffering from all forms of blood cancers.

In the video, Team Bio-Rad is seen with the event's hallmark lanterns that are lit during the walk to support cancer patients. Our team has raised more than $5,000 so far this year, and our Southern California team will soon be walking at another Light the Night walk in Anaheim, California.

At Bio-Rad, we believe that creating meaningful connections at work is just as important as achieving scientific breakthroughs. This past June, during France’s Quality of Life at Work Week from June 16–21, our French teams came together for “Connect 2025,” a special day dedicated to well-being, recognition, and teamwork.

From site to site, the atmosphere was filled with laughter, teamwork, and moments of pride. “I enjoy participating in Connect Days because they are a great way to disconnect from everyday life and meet colleagues in a more festive and cheerful setting,” said Lucie Watremetz, a Quality Manager from our Mitry-Mory location.

A Shared Experience Across All French Sites

Launched in 2023, Connect has quickly become a highly anticipated tradition for our teams at Gémenos, Marnes-la-Coquette, Mitry-Mory, and Steenvoorde. Each site participated in a one-day format built around the following highlights:

Town Halls - providing company updates while celebrating site-specific successes and addressing local challenges.
Long Service Awards - honoring the service anniversaries, dedication, and contributions of employees who have helped shape Bio-Rad’s journey. These awards reflect the very best of Bio-Rad’s culture — loyalty, teamwork, and a passion for making a difference.
Team Building Activities - encouraging collaboration and strengthening bonds through fun and interactive experiences. Employees embarked on an immersive treasure hunt inspired by the Pasteur Institute — a clever mix of science, history, and teamwork.

Designed to spark collaboration in a playful, dynamic atmosphere, this year’s team building activity gave everyone the chance to connect outside of their daily roles and responsibilities while meeting others from different departments and sites.

“It's always nice to get together with colleagues for some fun,” said Fatima Faitout, a CDG Field Marketing Assistant from our Marnes location. “It's a wonderful initiative. It brings people together and creates links.”

Thanks to the enthusiasm of our employees, Connect 2025 was not only a day to celebrate achievements, but also a chance to reinforce the spirit of collaboration that drives Bio-Rad forward. This month, Bio-Rad joined millions around the world in celebrating Diwali, known as the "festival of lights." We took the following video from one of our recent celebrations at our corporate headquarters in Hercules, California, where employees enjoyed delicious food, colorful art activities, and upbeat music—plus a chance to try some fun Bollywood-inspired dance steps!

It's quite clear from the video that employees enjoyed the chance to get outside, eat together, and try some new dance moves!

Employees from our Pleasanton, California office also came together to celebrate Diwali with food, art activities, and Indian attire!

Employees at our Irvine, California office enjoyed vibrant colors, laughter, and delicious food as part of their Diwali celebration.

This is just a snapshot of our celebrations, with many Bio-Rad employees also celebrating in India and other locations. Diwali brings with it happy tidings and a promise of a better tomorrow, two things we are honored to celebrate here at Bio-Rad.

Movember: All November

Movember is an annual global event and charity that runs throughout November, encouraging men to grow moustaches to raise awareness and funds for men's health issues, including prostate cancer, testicular cancer, mental health, and suicide prevention. Participants can also "Move for Movember" by walking or running 60 kilometers to remember the 60 men who die by suicide every hour, or "Host a Mo-ment" by organizing events to support the cause. Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead): November 1-2

The main Day of the Dead celebrations take place on November 2. On this day, families pay tribute to their lost loved ones by visiting the cemeteries where they are buried and leaving them flowers, their favorite food, and tributes. Throughout the day, Mexican families will also come together to eat food and drink. You may also see special parades with floats and people in highly elaborate costumes.

Culture Day: November 3

Culture Day, also known as Bunka no Hi, is honored annually in Japan on November 3. It was on this day in 1946 that the present Constitution of Japan was officially announced. Today, it's a fun national holiday where everyone comes together to enjoy various events that highlight the beauty and richness of Japan’s cultural heritage. To learn more, click here.

Loy Krathong Festival: November 5-6

Loy Krathong is a Thai festival celebrated annually throughout Thailand and in nearby countries with significant South Western Tai cultures (Laos, Shan, Mon, Tanintharyi, Kelantan, Kedah, Perlis and Xishuangbanna). The name could be translated as "to float ritual vessel or lamp," and comes from the tradition of making krathong or buoyant, decorated baskets, which are then floated on a river. Guy Fawkes Night: November 5

Guy Fawkes Night, celebrated on November 5 across the United Kingdom, marks the foiled Gunpowder Plot of 1605, when Guy Fawkes and his fellow conspirators attempted to blow up the Houses of Parliament. Today, the night is filled with bonfires, fireworks, and community gatherings, symbolizing both the preservation of parliamentary democracy and a reflection on the nation’s turbulent past.

Veterans Day: November 11

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on November 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. Congress passed a resolution in 1926 for an annual observance, and November 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans—living or dead—but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime. Seng Kut Snem: November 23

Seng Kut Snem is a significant festival in Meghalaya, India, celebrated annually by the indigenous Khasi people to commemorate the Seng Khasi Movement. The movement began on November 23, 1899, and the festival serves to uphold and preserve the Khasi religion, traditions, and cultural heritage, known as Niam Khasi.

Thanksgiving Day: November 27

America’s Thanksgiving holiday, born in the 1500s, mythologized in 1621, and observed even during the bleakest hours of the Civil War, now stands as one of the nation’s most anticipated and beloved days — celebrated each year on the fourth Thursday in November (November 27, 2025). Perhaps no other nonsectarian holiday has more tradition. Family, friends, food, and football have come to symbolize Thanksgiving — a rare celebratory holiday without an established gift-giving component. Bio-Rad in Action: French Team Walks for Breast Cancer

With two French teams participating in the Paris Heroes Race this summer, the spotlight recently shifted to our Gémenos site when the team there took part in the local charity race Odysséa Marseille. The race is a charity run and walk dedicated to raising funds for breast cancer research and patient support.

A team of nine employees showed up for the race on September 14, with some walking and others running. Without timing themselves for the 5k race, everyone contributed to making the event memorable with great team spirit and infectious energy.

Alexandra Christon, a Human Resources Manager in Gémenos, says she took part in the race with her colleagues to support a cause that is particularly close to her heart. "I had the honor of participating in the Odysséa charity race in Marseille to fight breast cancer,” Alexandra said. “Beyond the fact that this is a cause that touches me personally, it allowed me to share a wonderful and enriching moment with my colleagues. It was an experience full of hope and positivity that I am proud to have been a part of."

Making a Difference

Through the participation of our nine teammates, and the purchase of Odysséa race bibs and T-shirts, Bio-Rad raised 10,000 Euros (roughly $11,480 US dollars) and was ranked 10th in the challenge. Funds raised will help support local organizations such as Un K au féminin, which creates comfort kits for women undergoing breast cancer treatment.

Congratulations to the team for this wonderful collective effort! Your involvement and enthusiasm truly embody the values that drive us forward at Bio-Rad.

Hanukkah: December 14-22

Hanukkah, the eight-day Jewish Festival of Lights, commemorates the Maccabean victory over Greek-Syrian oppressors and the rededication of the Second Temple in Jerusalem during the 2nd century B.C. Beginning on 25 Kislev in the Hebrew calendar, the holiday is celebrated with lighting the menorah, special prayers, games, and traditional foods, honoring resilience, faith, and cultural heritage. Bio-Rad's Budapest Office Creates Community Library

At Bio-Rad's Budapest, Hungary office, a small idea was recently turned into a meaningful expression of who we are — and how we live our value of Together.

During a recent team-building activity, the Purchasing Team explored some of Budapest’s iconic second-hand bookstores and created the “Bio-Read Community Bookshelf.” Those involved said they are proud of what they’ve created.

“Many of us being lesser bookworms liked the idea to fill the empty shelves in the office and figured we can create something lasting for our colleagues sharing the office space with us,” said Daniel Balatoni, a procurement manager for Bio-Rad.

The community library they created includes a growing collection of books in multiple languages and genres that are now available to everyone in the office. It’s not only the books themselves that make this initiative special, but also the amazing team spirit and creativity behind them.

The shelf offers colleagues a moment to pause, discover new perspectives, and connect through stories — an everyday reminder that our culture is built through the people who shape it.

Kaapse Klopse: January 2

The Kaapse Klopse, or Cape Town Minstrel Carnival, is a vibrant celebration held every January 2 in Cape Town, South Africa. Also known as Tweede Nuwe Jaar (“Second New Year”), it fills the streets with thousands of brightly dressed minstrels playing lively music and dancing in colorful troupes. Rooted in 19th-century traditions, this joyful festival celebrates community, rhythm, and the rich cultural spirit of the Cape. To learn more, click here.

Farsang: January 6-February 17

In Hungary, Farsang is traditionally for merrymaking and courting, and even weddings. Various folk traditions are related to making winter go away and spring come sooner, including dressing up as scary things to ward off evil (because winter is believed to be kind of evil as it can kill you with cold and starvation). Internationally, one of the best-known Farsang-related traditions is the “Busójárás” at the tail of Farsang, when people in fur coats and heavy wooden masks have a parade through the city making noise and lighting a bonfire at night. This tradition, however, is particular only to the region of Mohács, in the Southern part of Hungary. Click here to learn more.

Epiphany/Three Kings' Day: January 6

At Epiphany, Christians celebrate the manifestation of Jesus to the world, primarily through the visit of the Magi (the three wise men) who brought gifts to the infant Jesus. The holiday, also known as Three Kings' Day, is celebrated on January 6 and marks the official end of the Christmas season. Some traditions also focus on the baptism of Jesus. Coming of Age Day: January 12

Coming of Age Day is a national holiday in Japan that is observed on the second Monday of January each year. The day marks a significant milestone in the lives of young people who have turned 20, as they are recognized as adults in society. For young people, it serves as a moment to take on responsibilities and awareness as members of society. Across the country, various municipalities hold a celebratory ceremony called Coming of Age Ceremony for the young people living in their areas.

Makar Sankranti/Pongal: January 14

Sankranti translates to “transfer.” It is a harvest festival and social celebration dedicated to the Hindu sun god Surya offering thanks for success and prosperity. There are multiday festivals with various customs that go by many regional names, including Pongal, Maghi, Sukarat, and Uttarayana.

Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 19

Martin Luther King Jr. Day, celebrated on the third Monday of January, honors the life and legacy of a leader who reshaped the nation through courage, hope, and nonviolent action. As the powerful voice of the Civil Rights Movement, Dr. King challenged racial discrimination and inspired sweeping legislative changes that continue to shape our society today. Franco-German Friendship Day: January 22

Since 2004, January 22, the date when the Elysée Treaty was signed in 1963, has been known as ‘Franco-German Day’. French president Jacques Chirac and German chancellor Gerhard Schröder introduced the Franco-German Day on the 40th anniversary of the signing of the Élysée Treaty in 1963. It is mainly celebrated in institutions such as schools and even results in events such as student exchanges, where French and German students take part in different activities.

For nearly a week before Lent, millions take to the streets in dazzling costumes, following energetic blocos, trios elétricos, and samba schools in a nonstop swirl of dancing, singing, and celebration. Lunar New Year/Spring Festival: February 15-23

The Lunar New Year, a widely cherished event, takes place in either January or February. Many countries and communities with Chinese heritage actively participate in this joyous occasion. Family Day: February 16

Family Day in Canada is a cheerful mid‑winter break that invites people to slow down, bundle up, and enjoy quality time with the ones they love. Seollal/ Korean New Year: February 17

Seollal, or Korean Lunar New Year is a holiday and celebration which marks the first day of the Korean Lunar Calendar. The celebration is typically three days long, beginning the day before and ending the day after. Traditionally, families gather from all over Korea at the house of their oldest male relative to pay their respects to both ancestors and elders. The centerpiece of the holiday is the ritual of ancestor worship, but there are other activities including eating together, playing games and “Sebae," where children and students bow to their elders and receive small gifts of money.

Start of Ramadan: February 17

Ramadan is the ninth month of the Muslim calendar and the holy month of fasting in Islam. During the month of Ramadan, Muslims fast from dawn until dusk, and they are permitted to eat and drink only before sunrise and after sunset. Observing the daily fast for Ramadan comprises one of the Five Pillars of Islam. In addition to fasting, the month is a period of introspection, communal prayer (ṣalāt) in the mosque, and reading of the Qurʾān. The month of difficult fasting and focused religious observance concludes with the jubilant feasting holiday of Eid al-Fitr, “Feast of Fast-Breaking", held on March 19.

Check out the sights and sounds from an exciting Lunar New Year celebration held recently at our Hercules, California headquarters! Following traditions of other Lunar New Year celebrations held around the world, the event included a boisterous lion dance, delicious food, arts and crafts, and of course, red envelopes passed out for good luck.

It's clear from the video that employees had an unbelievable time ringing in the Year of the Horse!

Budapest Office Celebrates Earth Day

Earth Day, held annually on April 22, is a global initiative to demonstrate support for environmental protection. This year, the Budapest office marked the occasion with a series of initiatives designed to make sustainability more tangible and closer to everyday work life.

One of the highlights was a first-ever clothes swap, created to encourage more conscious consumption. Colleagues were invited to bring pre-loved, good-quality clothing and exchange items freely with one another. The idea was simple: extend the lifecycle of garments while offering a practical alternative to buying new. Items that remained at the end of the event were donated to the Cseriti charity shop network, which operates second-hand stores across Hungary and supports social causes through resale.

In addition to the swap, a "Climate Fresk" workshop was also organized. In a small-group setting, participants explored the causes and mechanisms of climate change in a structured yet open environment. The workshop created space for reflection and discussion, helping participants better understand the interconnected nature of environmental challenges.

Together, these initiatives provided an opportunity to engage with sustainability in a tangible way. They also highlighted how small, everyday choices—whether it’s rethinking consumption or taking time to better understand climate issues—can have a meaningful impact.
