As part of our Diversity and Inclusion Program here at Bio-Rad, we publish a monthly Multicultural Calendar of events that are commonly celebrated in the United States. Our goal is to feature a variety of events that help bring cultural awareness to various groups' histories, traditions, and accomplishments while also highlighting events important to us both as a company and a community.
December 2023
World AIDS Day: December 1
Each year on December 1, we commemorate World AIDS Day. This important awareness day remains a time to reflect on our worldwide response to HIV/AIDS while honoring the lives of those lost to AIDS-related illnesses. In 2023, In 2023, the event reached its 35th anniversary and celebrated the occassion with the theme “World AIDS Day 35: Remember and Commit”. For more information, click here.
International Day of Persons with Disabilities: December 3
The annual observance of the International Day of Persons with Disabilities aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights, and well-being of persons with disabilities. This includes children and adults. This is especially important for aging individuals with disabilities. This year’s International Day of Persons with Disabilities urges us to examine our communities and our policies and open our hearts to ensure that they are accessible and accommodating for individuals living with a disability! Hanukkah: December 7-15
Hanukkah, known as the Festival of Lights, is an important Jewish festival to commemorate the victory and miracle of the oil that lasted for eight days, symbolizing the rededication of the Holy Temple in Jerusalem. It lasts for 8 days, during which Jewish families light candles on a special menorah each night. Families gather to exchange gifts, play games, and enjoy traditional foods like latkes and sufganiyot. Christmas: December 25
Christmas is a Christian holiday celebrating the birth of Jesus. The English term Christmas (“mass on Christ’s day”) is actually a fairly recent title. The earlier term, as you may recall, is Yule, which referred to the feast of the winter solstice. The corresponding terms in other languages—Navidad in Spanish, Natale in Italian, Noël in French—all probably denote nativity. To learn more about the history of Christmas, click here!
Kwanzaa: December 26-January 1
Kwanzaa is a weeklong celebration held in the United States that honors African heritage in African-American culture observed from December 26 to January 1. During the holiday, families celebrate with feasts, music, and dance, and end the holiday with a day dedicated to reflection and recommitment to the seven principles. To learn more, click here.
