R&D Mechanical Engineer

Bio-Rad is looking for an experienced Mechanical Engineer who gets excited about product development, is highly analytical, and sees the big picture needed to evolve a concept into a product. Technical Opportunity:

You will be a part of the R&D Engineering Team, a multi-disciplinary team developing instrument system solutions for Bio-Rad’s Life Sciences portfolio, including biomedical imaging, PCR, microscopy, chromatography, and cell sorting instrument platforms.

You will join a larger R&D team that has deep talent in mechatronic systems integrating mechanical, electrical, optical and systems engineering with chemistry, biology and software.  Come join us and be a key player in our next breakthrough product. You will partner and work with talented engineers, chemists, and biologists to develop integrated systems that promote discoveries and advances in life science. This work will span from a product’s research stage through its sunset.

How will you make an impact?

You will be supporting the mechanical design, development and documentation of life science products developed in an R&D environment. This includes products for: Gene Expression, Protein Purification, Protein Analysis, and Cell Analysis. Interfacing with cross functional teams, you will be developing instrument systems from concept through detailed design, manufacturing release, instrument verification, and product launch.

Responsibilities

• Work with scientists, engineers, project managers, and marketing staff to develop product requirements, specifications, qualification tests, and other project documentation.
• Perform risk analysis and use risk based decision making.
• Design parts and assemblies using Solidworks and other tools. Analyze and Verify designs. Transfer finished designs to Manufacturing.
• Work closely with Manufacturing Engineering and instrument production staff. Act as technical expert during product releases and sustaining activities.
• Prepare and make presentations, and create, present, or be active in design reviews. Perform root cause analysis and initiate corrective/preventive actions.
• You will be in a team focused environment requiring listening, cooperation as well as leadership and vision.
• Collaborate within a multidisciplinary team to develop mechanical solutions which enable next generation medical instruments.
• Review and analyze product requirements, articulate and document mechanical system requirements and functions.
• Participate in efforts relating to mechanical requirements definition, and functional decomposition, mechanical system architecture definition, modeling, and compliance including verification plans and reports.
• Develop mechanical solutions by designing components, creating assemblies, procuring parts, and authoring assembly instructions. Perform thermal/structural/CFD modeling and analysis of components and systems.
• Assemble and test engineering prototypes alongside a diverse R&D team to validate research and correlate mechanical models.
• Perform root-cause investigations on systems and components to correct problems, improve product quality and reliability.
• Generate and release formal engineering documentation (part and assembly drawings, installation instructions, test reports, etc.) to support the development and manufacture of world class medical instruments.
• Collaborate with downstream partners to incorporate the considerations associated with Design for Reliability (DFR), Design for Manufacturing (DFM), Design to Cost (DTC), and Design for Service (DFS).
• Ensure high work quality, timely deliverables, and provide feedback to managers on process improvements.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree or equivalent in mechanical engineering or a related engineering discipline.
• 2+ years of experience in product development environments, taking abstract concepts and ideas and formulating a detailed engineering plan to deliver products to market. Mechanical design experience is required.
• In depth knowledge of and application of principles and theories of engineering.
• Strong communication, leadership, technical, and computer skills.
• Coordination, tact and team work.
• CAD experience required, Solidworks experience is preferred.
• Experience in developing medical devices or diagnostic instrumentation is strongly desired
• Additional experience in manufacturing engineering or systems engineering is desired.
• Shall have a proven track record of success in engineering and product development.
• Demonstrated ability to thrive under ambiguity and the ability to manage teams through change.
• Experience in a regulated development environment is preferred. ISO13485, FDA, or CE IVD experience is strongly desired.
• Excellent problem solving, organizational, and communication skills are required.
• Experience in drafting and demonstrated GD&T understanding required.
• Training in Design for Excellence principals preferred.
