At the Digital Biology Center (a division of Bio-Rad) we use microfluidic chips to generate nanoliter-sized droplets as reaction vessels to power an extremely precise digital nucleic acid measurement method (droplet digital PCR). Now that we have solidified our market lead in digital PCR, we are expanding into new applications for our core technology. We believe our partition technology creating hundreds of thousands of droplets will open new avenues in basic life sciences research and will become a new paradigm in clinical diagnostics.

At the heart of our digital technology is the ability to stabilize an aqueous droplet in fluorocarbon-based oil using novel surfactants. These surfactants allow us to control and alter interfacial properties whereby we can enable and catalyze unique in-droplet chemistries. In turn these chemistries enable novel applications in the digital biology space. To achieve this end, we have a highly engaged and talented emulsion chemistry team.

If you are a R&D chemist who thrives on pushing back the boundaries of the unknown; relishes the opportunity to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment; and, thrilled by personally taking your ideas from white board to full product release, please read on!

Responsibilities

  • Able to create, synthesize, and purify novel fluorocarbon-based surfactants for use in microfluidic emulsion-based technologies.
  • Responsible for designing and conducting experiments, analyzing, and interpreting data, as well as communicating and presenting results to team-members and management.
  • Able to solve problems in multi-disciplinary teams in a fast-paced, dynamic, scientifically driven, team-oriented, and customer-focused environment inclusive of research, development, and manufacturing.
  • Be a subject matter expert for emulsion chemistries.

Qualifications

  • Ph.D. degree in chemistry or molecular biology with background in chemistry. Postdoctoral experience desirable.  Or M.S. with 5 years' industrial experiences.
  • Experience with fluorescence and UV-Vis absorption spectroscopy is essential.
  • Proven capacity to thrive in a multi-disciplinary setting while working alongside engineers, biologists, software developers and manufacturing professionals.
  • Track record of self-motivated design, execution, and analysis of experiments on aggressive schedules in a rapidly changing environment.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, logical and analytical thinking, ability to multitask, work independently and on a team, and the ability to learn, troubleshoot, and problem solve.
