Bio-Rad is seeking a VP for our Life Science Group’s R&D Department.

Responsibilities

  • Lead, prioritize, coordinate and drive all activities of the LSR R&D team, including Engineering, Software, Advanced Development, Molecular & Cell Biology, Reagent Development and Chemistry & Process Chromatography. 
  • This team supports Bio-Rad Life Science Group products focused on Conventional and Real-Time PCR instruments and reagents, Image processing, Western Blotting work flows, Process Chromatography, and Cell Biology.  This team is mostly based in Hercules CA, with international sites in China and Israel.
  • Understand the customer need in the market segments we serve to help guide translation of the marketing specifications to technical specifications.
  • Collaborate, as part of the senior management team, with the VP of Marketing, Program Management, and the VP of Business Development, to establish appropriate product roadmaps and milestones to achieve our goals.
  • Propose to Management team new technologies and R&D solutions as part of the product strategy.
  • Provide support in case of quality or manufacturing issues for existing products.  In a world shaped by the COVID pandemic, with myriad parts and/or raw material shortages, combined with an uptick in demand for many of our products, this has become a bigger part of the job.
  • Provide support to the Global Commercial Organization as necessary.
  • Coordinate, consolidate and validate the development strategies suggested by the R & D managers in the different disciplines.
  • Work with VP of Business Development and IP legal team to identify, value, file, and maintain patents.
  • Work with Facilities, IT, HR and Finance to provide appropriate working conditions and support required of the R&D team needed to do their jobs.
  • Conceive new products design which fit both the marketing specifications and the manufacturing process.
  • Validate and consolidate projects, the main lines of development and the budgets proposed by the R&D managers.
  • Coordinate the transfer of products and processes to global manufacturing partners (both internal and external).
  • Financial review and management of (budget, actual) of R & D expenses by department and by project in cooperation with Finance.
  • Develop R&D employees; Set objectives and assess performance against them.
  • Communicate goals and strategy.
  • Lead, motivate and inspire the R&D teams to work collaboratively to deliver key results (and have some fun while doing it).
  • Inform the Management team about important business and technological issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s Degree or equivalent in Sciences (PhD preferred).
  • Minimum 10 years’ experience in industry including a proven track record in product development of technologies, reagents and systems.
  • Experience in managing and coaching interdisciplinary teams of greater than 100 employees a plus.
  • Demonstrated experience in systems development (assays, hardware, software).
  • Demonstrated experience working with and/or leading global teams.
  • Excellent technical, leadership and team building skills.
  • Demonstrated experience developing products in a structured phase-gate system.
  • Demonstrated new product development expertise (systems and reagent development).
  • Experience moving new technologies or start-up ventures to mainstream commercialization is a plus.
  • Capacity to align with VP of Marketing to set and communicate product roadmap vision.
  • Strategic thinker with strong analytical skills.
  • Decision-maker, able to work under stress and rigorous objectives.
  • Ability to manage, lead, engage, and inspire scientific teams.
  • Ability to plan and delegate resources and projects.
  • Strong people management skills.
  • Strong communication, relationship building, presentation and negotiation skills required.
