Career Advice from Women Engineers at Bio-Rad

January 23, 2024

The world of engineering is not always an easy career path for women to navigate. Female engineers often spearhead innovative and impactful work, but this sometimes means being the only woman in the room.

Following your passion and having a support system are both key to being successful — but what else can help you along your career path as a woman engineer? To find out, we spoke with women engineers at Bio-Rad and asked them what career advice they would give to others.

Here's what they had to say!

Maedeh Moahammadifar

R&D Electrical Engineer

Embrace the evolution in engineering: Engineering is a swiftly evolving field – see it as a group moving forward! Join unfamiliar areas in your field and view every misstep as a valuable input.

Build your career on your strength: Focus on your soft skills, then let hard skills naturally follow and grow from them.

Tanesha Mogan

Research Associate II

You never know what a simple hello could do for you. Being humble and making connections with everyone you meet is vital to success because you might need their help with something in the future.

If you’re in high school and want to pursue engineering, volunteer at a museum, look up summer internships, or join a robotics team. If you’re a college student, talk to other peers and join student organizations that can give you leadership experience, or look for other resources on campus that offer career development. If you’re a recent grad with a new job, always reach out to colleagues and learn from their experiences!

JoJo Chang

Sr. Staff R&D Engineer

Stay curious. Keep the passion to pursue career interests and have the hunger to explore more.

Stay open. Challenges require an open mind to discover alternative solutions. New technologies and career paths are always developing and evolving, so make the most out of available opportunities.

Joan Dowd

Sr. Engineer, R&D Human Factors

It never hurts to ask. You’d be surprised how many (and who) will be willing to help/mentor you or point you in the right direction. Maybe don't start at the top, but find a senior level person you feel comfortable with and that you can trust. It’s amazing what can come with those interactions.

Be nice! Always take time, especially when someone needs your help or expertise.
