At Bio-Rad, we publish a monthly Multicultural Calendar of events that are commonly celebrated in the United States. Our goal is to feature a variety of events that help bring cultural awareness to various groups' histories, traditions, and accomplishments while also highlighting events important to us both as a company and a community.
Diwali: October 29 - November 3
Diwali is a five-day celebration that starts with Dhanteras and concludes with Bhaiya Dooj. However, the festivities and dates vary across regions. Rooted in ancient traditions, Diwali carries profound spiritual significance meaning "a row of lights," and its observance revolves around illuminating homes and surroundings to invite happiness and prosperity. Native American Heritage Month: All November
Native American Heritage Month is an important time to celebrate the traditions, languages and stories of Native American, Alaska Native, Native Hawaiian, and affiliated Island communities while ensuring that their rich histories and contributions continue to thrive. National Diabetes Month: All November
November is National Diabetes Month, a time when communities across the country seek to bring attention to diabetes. This year’s focus is on taking action to prevent diabetes health problems. Diabetes is a disease that occurs when your blood glucose, also called blood sugar, is too high. It affects about 38 million Americans. To learn more, click here.
Day of the Dead: October 31 - November 2
Day of the Dead, also known as the Dia de los Muertos, is frequently mistaken for the "Mexican Halloween" due to its use of skeletons and when it's celebrated. This three-day Aztec celebration in late October, which has its roots in southern Mexico, honors the memory of departed family members, friends and even pets. To learn more, click here.
Veterans Day: November 11
Veterans Day is a federal holiday recognized each November to celebrate and honor all U.S. veterans — deceased or living. Veterans Day is not to be confused with Memorial Day, a day to remember those service members who gave the ultimate sacrifice of their lives. Memorial Day is in May of each year. Thanksgiving: November 28
Thanksgiving is a day for people in the US to give thanks for what they have. Families and friends get together for a meal, which traditionally includes a roast turkey, stuffing, gravy, and more. However, not everyone sees Thanksgiving as a cause for celebration. Some in the US Native American community feel the mythology of the holiday ignores the destruction of indigenous cultures that followed European settlement.
