Materials Supervisor

Bio-Rad's Richmond, CA Chemical Plant is seeking a Materials Supervisor to lead site inventory operations supporting production of Process Chromatography resins, liquid buffers, monomer solutions, oils, and other specialized life science products. 

This role leads a team of 6–9 direct reports across Supply Assurance (buyers) and Material Handlers, overseeing procurement, warehousing, and shipping for a site inventory of 3,200+ unique parts. The Materials Supervisor ensures uninterrupted material flow — from incoming supply, to the production floor, to daily shipments to the offsite Distribution Center — keeping production running and customer demand met. 

The role blends hands-on daily execution with longer-term strategic planning: 

• Day-to-day: Monitor and act on ERP signals, resolve urgent shortages, escalate supply issues, and manage all material movement. 
• Strategic: Drive inventory reduction and turn-rate targets, reduce scrap, and ensure supply continuity through safety stock strategy, dual sourcing, supplier performance tracking, and inventory optimization. 

How You’ll Make an Impact:

• Supervise and develop a team of 6–9 direct reports across Supply Assurance (buyers) and Material Handlers, assigning work, setting performance expectations, and monitoring output for accuracy and timeliness. 
• Oversee end-to-end warehouse logistics — receiving, storage, transfers, shipping, and material flow — ensuring accurate ERP/SAP transactions across 3,200+ unique parts. 
• Manage materials requirements alignment with the current supply plan and targeted inventory metrics, adjusting for fluctuating priorities. 
• Complete required ERP transactions directly for procurement and warehouse functions and be able to audit and correct within the ERP system as needed. 
• Assess resource capacity (personnel, equipment, materials) against current and long-term demand, partnering with operations and leadership on utilization and constraint mitigation. 
• Lead or support Lean and continuous improvement initiatives to optimize inventory levels, minimize production costs, and reduce scrap. 
• Use data analytics to monitor inventory levels and inventory turns, and forecasts, responding promptly to demand and operational changes affecting customer needs. 
• Prepare reports and data analysis as needed, communicating insights clearly to cross-functional stakeholders. 

What You Bring: 

• Education: Bachelor's degree (BA/BS) in Business, Supply Chain Management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience. 
• Work Experience: 2+ years of experience in production, warehousing, and procurement, (experience in procurement and warehousing highly desirable); 2+ years of supervisory experience in a union environment preferred. 
• Experience in an ISO certified batch managed chemical site or bio-technology manufacturing site desirable. 
• Solid understanding of transactional ERP (SAP) and MRP systems. 
• Proven project management capability. 
• Strong PC/software skills (Excel, Word, PowerPoint, database, and manufacturing software).
• Excellent leadership, influencing, and communication skills. 
• Proven analytical and problem-solving ability with demonstrated capacity for sound business decision-making. 
• Experience developing direct reports and building high-performing teams across multi-departmental organizations.

Location: This position must be based in Richmond, CA and requires the employee to be located within commuting distance of the office.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $107,900 to $148,400 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
