Systems Engineer - Fluidics

Bio-Rad is looking for an enthusiastic Fluidics Engineer to join the Digital Biology Group of Bio-Rad based in Pleasanton, CA. You will be part of a multidisciplinary team focused on developing innovative products using our core partitioning technology. Our ddPCR and Single Cell systems have enabled scientists around the world to make impactful discoveries in the life sciences and healthcare. You will report directly to the Engineering Manager for Microfluidics, and be part of a larger multi-disciplinary R&D team. Come join us and be a key player in our next innovative instrument. You will be leverage your knowledge to design, develop and test fluidic systems in support of our digital biology products. Interfacing with cross-functional teams, you will develop instrument systems from concept through detailed design, manufacturing release, instrument verification and product launch.

How You’ll Make An Impact: 

• Lead activities related to microfluidic consumables and fludics sub-systems including design, development, testing, verification, and product transfer.
• Provide technical knowledge of systems engineering principles and their application to develop cost- effective, reliable, and high-quality systems that satisfy customer needs and business requirements.
• Design and conduct experiments to evaluate system performance and iterate device design through fundamental multiphysics modeling and empirical testing.
• Ensures compliance with quality and regulatory requirements by applying design control processes such as risk management, configuration management, requirements management and verification testing.
• Apply design-for-manufacturing principles to transition devices from concept to commercialization by working closely with external vendors.
• Work closely with Systems Engineers, Instrument Engineers, Assay Developers and Software Developers in all aspects of product development.
• Communicate results effectively, guiding the team through data and observations on critical design decisions.

What You Bring: 

Minimum Qualifications: 

• Master's degree or equivalent in a related engineering discipline such as Mechanical, Chemical or Biomedical Engineering.
• 5+ years of experience working with microfluidics, specifically designing and testing devices.
• Hands-on experience with pumps, valves, sensors, feedback controls, and firmware for microfluidic applications is required.
• Organized self-starter with excellent problem solving and analytical skills.
• Leverages strong communication and interpersonal skills to drive and implement decisions.

Preferred Qualifications:

• PhD in Mechanical, Chemical or Biomedical Engineering with an emphasis on microfluidics or equivalent.
• Experience with droplet-based microfluidic systems, specifically ddPCR.
• Demonstrated skill in applying risk management, usability and reliability tools and practices, expertise, and methodologies to deliver complex programs.
• Proficiency in CAD-based software such as SolidWorks. Additional experience in software for microfluidic design such as L-Edit or LayoutEditor is a plus.
• Demonstrated ability in designing and building test rigs/fixtures for evaluating microfluidic designs and conceptsis. ics, specifically designing and testing devices.
• Knowledgeable in using multiphysics modeling software such as COMSOL.
• Knowledge of manufacturing and process development activities such as qualification, validation, design of experiments (DOE), and FMEA.
• General knowledge or experience with molecular biology, immunology, or biological sciences.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $130,200 to $179,100 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job-permitted factors.  This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon the achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance
