Bio-Rad is looking for a Production Supervisor for the Richmond, CA, Chemical Plant. In this position, you will lead the Day Shift Production Team in the Richmond Chemical Plant that produces process chromatography resins, liquid buffers, monomer solutions, oils, and other specialized life science products.

In this role, you will ensure safe, quality manufacturing of multiple complex batch resins and ensure efficient manufacturing processes to meet the current and future manufacturing commitments for a growing, key business for Bio-Rad. This role will be responsible for a team of 6 to 10 Chemical Process Operators and Technicians and will also have overall responsibility for a portion of the manufactured products, ensuring that activities on second shift and activities required by other departments are completed on time. This role reports to the Production Manager and is part of the site extended leadership team.

This role requires effective day to day management of personnel, efficient scheduling of resources, and oversight of the end-to-end manufacturing process for the key assigned products. This role is expected to meet short-term deliverables (delivery of bulk materials, metrics, budget, scrap targets, interfacing with other groups, etc.) and longer term goals (improved efficiency, development programs for personnel, health and safety improvements and waste minimization strategies).

How You’ll Make an Impact:

  • Daily management and coordination with other support departments (Quality Control, Planning, Warehouse and Maintenance) of large-scale production of process chromatography resins, oils, and other specialized life science products ensuring delivery of quality product, on time and in full, as scheduled.
  • Safely manage 4-10 personnel on team providing timely feedback, setting goals, cross training plans, and conducting performance reviews; ensuring training completion and continually looking for opportunities to improve or expand team member skills
  • Use own knowledge, skill, and experience to monitor processes and troubleshoot, adjust to meet schedule, budgets, and established targets, including assessing SAP BOMs, routing and procedures to make efficiency and quality improvements.
  • Develop strong understanding of processes to provide technical guidance for production issues and customer quality concerns, identifying root cause or problems and implementing corrective action.
  • Manage manufacturing documentation, reports, and technical documentation such as Standard Operating Procedures and Production Procedures capturing and eliminating any deviation and ambiguity.
  • Act as production or site representative in new product introduction, scale up and capacity improvement projects.
  • Identify and coordinate with other site teams to lead continuous improvement projects on equipment, quality and workflow optimization.
  • In conjunction with other site groups, develop annual budgets, participate and update standard costs, and lead continuous improvement activities in area.

What You Bring:

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in engineering, chemistry, or related field with 10+ years of manufacturing production experience, preferably in a regulated environment or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Work Experience: 10+ years of supervisory experience in a chemical manufacturing site preferred. Experience in a union environment is a plus. 
  • Knowledge of polymer manufacturing or similar batch processing with reactors is preferred, along with ISO-certified employment experience.
  • Proven record of working with hazardous materials in a compliance driven environment e.g. BAAQMD, OSHA, PSM, etc.
  • A strong safety and quality mindset that can drive a culture of zero incidents and zero defects through effective communication at an individual and team level.
  • Experienced with the introduction of new products, process scale up and the transfer of products to other manufacturing locations.
  • Thorough understanding of quality systems (ISO 13485, GMP) as they relate to production operations.
  • Capable of handling assigned role independently and with minimum supervision via multitasking and prioritizing projects and assignments while keeping day-to-day operations running smoothly.
  • Demonstrated ability to function as a technical expert, apply continuous improvement principles (Lean, TPM, 6-sigma) to analyze production problems and make improvements.
  • Strong computer skills including SAP or other ERP, document control, time management systems and Microsoft Office programs.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $105,000 to 144,500 annually at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is also eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
