Bio-Rad Laboratories is seeking a Human Factors Engineering Summer Intern to support formative usability activities for medical device and IVD development programs. This internship offers hands-on experience planning, executing, and documenting formative usability studies in alignment with Bio-Rad’s Human Factors / Usability Engineering (HF/UE) framework and applicable regulatory standards. The intern will work under the supervision of experienced Human Factors Engineers and collaborate with cross-functional partners, building foundational HF/UE skills while contributing to active programs

How You’ll Make An Impact: 

  • Support planning and preparation of formative usability studies using Bio-Rad HF/UE templates and workflows. 
  • Assist with development of study documentation, including test plans, moderator guides, recruiting screeners, and materials lists. 
  • Participate in usability session execution, including participant onboarding, task facilitation, structured probing, and note-taking. 
  • Collect, organize, and code objective usability data (e.g., task success, errors, time on task, workflow deviations). 
  • Summarize qualitative user feedback, identify usability issues and trends, and contribute to drafting formative usability reports and stakeholder readouts. 

Learning & Development Opportunities: 

  • Exposure to IEC 62366–aligned Human Factors / Usability Engineering processes. 
  • Hands-on experience with usability testing of prototypes, GUIs, IFUs, labeling, and workflows. 
  • Understanding of HF governance, traceability, and documentation rigor for regulatory submissions. 
  • Collaboration with Engineering, Marketing, and external vendors in a regulated R&D environment.

What You Bring: 

  • Currently pursuing a Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Human Factors, Psychology, Human-Centered Design, Biomedical Engineering, Industrial Engineering, or a related discipline. 
  • Eligible candidates must be rising juniors, seniors, or graduate students who intend to return to their academic program the following. 
  • Strong interest in human factors, usability engineering, and user-centered design. 
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills. 
  • Ability to work in a structured, document-driven environment with strong attention to detail.

Location: This position must be based in Hercules, California and requires the employee to be located within commuting distance of the office.

Compensation: The hourly range for this position is $25 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors.
