As part of our Diversity and Inclusion Program here at Bio-Rad, we publish a monthly Multicultural Calendar of events that are commonly celebrated in the United States. Our goal is to feature a variety of events that help bring cultural awareness to various groups' histories, traditions, and accomplishments while also highlighting events important to us both as a company and a community.

 

Filipino American History Month: All October

Filipino American History Month is held in October each year to celebrate the date when Filipinos first made landfall in the US on the Spanish galleon Nuestra Senora de Esperanza at Morro Bay on October 18, 1587. In 2024, Filipino American History Month focuses on “Struggle, Resistance, Solidarity, and Resilience,” a theme that underscores the indomitable spirit of the Filipino American community and the many ways in which Filipinos have successfully overcome adversity throughout history. Global Diversity Awareness Month: All October

Although its origins are difficult to trace, Global Diversity Awareness Month represents the perfect opportunity for you to learn more about new cultures, and explore some of the diversity that makes the world such a wonderful place. LGBT+ History Month: All October

National LGBT+ History Month is observed every year in the United States during the month of October. This month commemorates and celebrates the history of lesbian, gay, transgender, and bisexual people. The holiday traces its roots to 1994 when it was created by a Mehlville High School teacher named Rodney Wilson in Missouri, U.S.A. To learn more, click here
 

Rosh Hashanah (Jewish): October 2-4

Rosh Hashana begins on the evening of Oct 2, 2024 and ends on the evening of Oct 4, 2024. This Jewish holiday is often referred to as “the Jewish New Year,” and occurs on the first two days of the Hebrew month of Tishrei. To learn more, click here

 

Navratri: October 3-11

Navratri is one of the most widely celebrated festivals in India, dedicated to the nine divine forms of Durga Mata. It is a time filled with devotion, powerful energy, and cheerful festivities that add to the overall mood and aura of the celebrations. For those unfamiliar, Navratri is a Sanskrit term that translates to ‘Nine Nights’ (Nav means nine, and Ratri means night). These nine nights are dedicated to worshiping Goddess Durga in her nine different forms, each form representing a unique aspect of her divine power, such as strength, love, beauty, and courage. World Mental Health Day: October 10

Yom Kippur (Jewish): October 11-12

Yom Kippur – the Day of Atonement – falls on the tenth day of the Hebrew month of Tishrei. Yom Kippur is the climax of the Yamim Noraim, the Days of Awe, that started with Rosh Hashana. For those who practice, Yom Kippur is in many ways the holiest day of the year when they fast, pray, and engage in repentance. To learn more, click here

 

Dussehra/Vijayadashami: October 12

Vijaydashmi, or Dusshera, is the 10th and the last day of Durga Puja; this year it’s October 12. All over India Hindus celebrate this auspicious day in many different ways. In some parts, it’s the day Goddess Durga killed the demon Mahishasur. After nine days of Navratri, the festival culminates with the immersion of the idol of Durga. To learn more, click here
