Materials Manager

Bio-Rad is looking for a Materials Manager for the Richmond, CA, Chemical Plant. This position will lead the Production Planning, Supply Assurance (buyers) and Warehouse group for the Richmond Chemical Plant that produces process chromatography resins, liquid buffers, monomer solutions, oils, and other specialized life science products. In this role, you will ensure a smooth flow of finished products to Bio-Rad’s customers and be key to safely and efficiently meeting the current and future manufacturing commitments for a growing, key business for Bio-Rad. 

This role will be responsible for all procurement, production planning, inventory management and warehouse activities for the various product lines that are manufactured on-site and for subcontracted parts that are managed by the site. The Richmond Chemical plant has over 3000 unique part numbers and complex batch production processes. This role reports to the Site Leader and has 10+ employees, including a planning supervisor, buyers, and a team of 5+ warehouse associates. This role requires effective day to day warehouse operations management, and oversight of planning and procurement functions meeting short term deliverables (customer orders, make to forecast and make to safety stock levels, etc.) and longer term goals (inventory cost reductions, spend goals, safety stock strategies, and inventory turn targets). You will work with multiple on-site teams to meet customer demands and multiple external teams such as Sales and Marketing, Supply Planning to meet customer and business needs.

How You’ll Make An Impact: 

  • Identify and maintain mid and long term procurement and production plans that serve as the foundation for site staffing/equipment, captital, outsourcing plans and schedules (MPS / MRP). Utilize forecasts, direction from Global Supply Planning, and Sales against supply and plant constraints to optimize plans. 
  • Understand plant capacities and constraints with the ability to articulate related insights to cross functional stakeholders. Accurately maintain the appropriate purchasing and planning parameters for capacity, resources, work centers, and shop calendar to generate recommendations to other departments, capacity expansion needs, and NPI plans and timelines. 
  • Oversee production plans, purchase requirements and orders, inventory levels, and warehousing KPIs, to ensure Materials Group effectively supply to customer and business needs. 
  • Utilize Power BI reports, excel data analysis, and other reports to monitor effectiveness and proactively manage potential conflicts, changing or fluctuating demand requirements and/or disruptions in production due to material or labor shortages or bottlenecks. 
  • Manage product lifecycle projects for new, existing, and discontinuing products to ensure product availability and to minimize scrap via communications on status and issues with Production, Procurement, Supply Planning, Engineering, R&D, QC, and Division Marketing. 
  • Drive and identify initiatives to optimize and achieve targeted inventory. Analyze inventory movement / trends for optimum utilization, identify safety stock levels, optimum batch size, process capacity & efficiency, and analyze excess and obsolete materials for disposition. 
  • Provide direction and oversight for Production Warehouse including end to end logistics management from receiving, kitting, shipping, cycle count management, optimal material flow, and SAP transactions. Manage union staff to ensure accurate receiving, work order processing, of batch managed and non batch managed materials, fulfilling production needs via direct request and Kanban, and complete shipment documentation in accordance with sound business practices (cGMP) and shipping regulations (DOT). 
  • Investigate and resolve issues associated with material shortage, receipt, material movement, issuance, shipment and associated transactions. Ensures inventory balances are accurately reported in both the ERP and WMS systems including cycle counting meeting 100% on-time cycle count plans. 
  • Prepare, maintain and publish appropriate performance metrics for different levels of organization including Materials team and for Site or Supply Chain Leadership. 
  • Hire, manage, evaluate performance, and develop team members via assignment of work, setting performance expectations, assigning priorities, and monitoring the output of individual schedules for completeness, accuracy, and timeliness.
  • Troubleshoot problems that impact the smooth flow of production and disrupt the established production schedules. Drive continuous improvement within department to optimize workflows and actively support site Lean journey through identification of opportunities, data analysis and participation in site or business level continuous improvement events.

What You Bring: 

  • Education: Bachelor’s degree in Business, Supply Chain Management or related discipline and/or a combination of education and experience. 
  • Work Experience: 8+ years manufacturing production experience, working in production, warehousing or production scheduling preferably in a regulated environment with at least 5+ years of production planning and scheduling experience. APICS CPIM certification a plus. 
  • 2+ years of related supervisory experience required. 
  • Must be strongly proficient in a ERP/MRP system with SAP highly desired. Must also possess strong PC skills (Excel, Word, Powerpoint, database software, internet software, manufacturing software). 
  • Excellent leadership, influencing and communication skills. Experience developing subordinate supervisors and building high performance teams across multi-departmental organizations. 
  • Advanced understanding of financial principles related to budgeting, variance and gross margin management, setting innovative performance metrics and standards. 
  • Strong analytical and proven problem solving capability along with demonstrated ability to make sound business decisions. Proven experience in Lean, TPM, 6 Sigma or other continuous improvement programs preferred.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $133,900 to $184,200 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
