Manufacturing Maintenance Supervisor

This position will supervise the Maintenance functions at the Richmond Chemical Plant, which produces process chromatography resins, liquid buffers, monomer solutions, oils, and other specialized life science products.

The Maintenance Supervisor will be responsible for overseeing day-to-day maintenance activities to support reliable operation of plant equipment, including glass-lined reactors with heating systems, semi-automated fill lines, air classifiers, wet sizing units, inline mixing systems, and semi-automated dispense systems. Site instrumentation includes control valves, temperature, pressure, and speed transmitters. Automation systems include Allen Bradley RS Logix, Control/Compact Logix, Automation Direct HMIs, and PLCs.

How You’ll Make An Impact: 

  • Supervise the daily activities of the Manufacturing Maintenance team and coordinate with contracted service providers.
  • Ensure equipment is maintained at optimal service levels through scheduled preventive maintenance, rapid troubleshooting, and timely completion of calibrations and inspections.
  • Perform or assist with skilled maintenance tasks as needed.
  • Work closely with operations, engineering, and quality teams to support plant projects and production needs.
  • Support reliability improvement initiatives through proactive monitoring and basic analysis of equipment performance.
  • Ensure maintenance activities are performed in compliance with site policies, procedures, and safety standards.
  • Assist with training and development of maintenance team members to maintain required skills and knowledge.
  • Maintain documentation of maintenance work, inspections, and equipment history as required.

This role reports to the Manufacturing Engineering & Maintenance Manager and plays a key part in ensuring equipment availability, reliability, and safety within the plant.

  • Oversees and administers all aspects of manufacturing maintenance activities, perform daily management, prioritization and execution of maintenance requests and preventative maintenance work orders for a batch process chemical manufacturing and packaging facility
  • Maintain electronic maintenance planning system and set work assignments for maintenance team of 3-5 direct reports and interface/influence prioritization and timing of work for Corporate Facilities Maintenance team.
  • Prepare and review relevant maintenance metrics to drive improvement on “time on tools”, adherence to budget, uptime/OEE and calibration performance. Report out to various audiences.
  • Develop, implement, manage, and sustain all maintenance programs including preventative maintenance, spare parts program, calibration program, planning and scheduling, training and procedures.
  • Plan, staff, and supervise equipment projects to achieve safe, efficient execution and communication between work streams.
  • Drive improvements in department, and greater site, with particular emphasis on EHS programs, 5S/housekeeping standards and contractor management. Ensure that all work performed by staff and contractors meets Regulatory and Corporate standards.
  • Provide leadership and development to the plant’s maintenance personnel. Set expectations and hold employees accountable for performance and professional behavior.
  • Ensure resources are available for routine and emergency manufacturing support for equipment and processes and balance this against deliverables for strategic projects and continuous improvement goals.
  • Champion continuous improvement in all areas of maintenance by identifying inefficiencies and supporting sustainable solutions.
  • Build a strong understanding of plant equipment to help develop sparing strategies and reduce unexpected downtime.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional partners in Production, EHS, Quality, and Facilities to align on priorities and maintain a reliable manufacturing environment.
  • Help evaluate contractor performance to ensure compliance with site expectations and service standards.
  • Use equipment and calibration data to support issue identification and improvement opportunities.
  • Coach the maintenance team on problem-solving, continuous improvement, and professional development.

What You Bring:

Education:

  • Associate degree or technical certification in a related field required.
  • A Bachelor's degree in Engineering or a technical discipline is preferred but not required with relevant hands-on experience.

Experience:

  • Minimum of 3 years of maintenance or engineering experience in a chemical, manufacturing, or industrial environment.
  • At least 1 year of supervisory or team lead experience is preferred.
  • Exposure to project coordination, facility support, and working within GMP/ISO-regulated environments is a plus.
  • Familiarity with federal, state, and local regulations applicable to equipment, safety, and facility operations is desirable.

Technical Skills:

  • Strong instrumentation and electrical troubleshooting skills, including calibration and repair of industrial systems.
  • Hands-on experience with preventive maintenance programs, equipment reliability practices, and supporting plant operations.
  • Knowledge of validation, calibration, and maintenance systems—prior experience with site-specific systems and automation is a plus.
  • Proficiency in Computerized Maintenance Management Systems (CMMS); experience with SAP is preferred.

Leadership & Communication:

  • Ability to train and mentor maintenance technicians, including developing technical capabilities and problem-solving skills.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills to collaborate across departments and levels of the organization.
  • Strong analytical and troubleshooting abilities with a practical, solutions-focused approach.
  • Continuous Improvement:
  • Hands-on experience with Continuous Improvement (CI), Lean, TPM, or Six Sigma tools is required.
  • Participation or leadership in Kaizen events, root cause analysis, or other structured improvement activities is preferred.

Compensation: The estimated base salary range for this position is $94,100 to $129,400 at the time of posting. Actual compensation will be provided in writing at the time of offer, if applicable, and is based on several factors we believe fairly and accurately impact compensation, including geographic location, experience, knowledge, skills, abilities, and other job permitted factors. This position is eligible for a variable annual bonus, which is dependent upon achievement of your individual objectives and Company performance.
