January 1, 2024

As part of our Diversity and Inclusion Program here at Bio-Rad, we publish a monthly Multicultural Calendar of events that are commonly celebrated in the United States. New Year's Day: January 1

The New Year is here! For many, this is an opportunity to reflect on the good and bad in the year that just ended, and to resolve to do better in the coming year. Many customs involve bringing prosperity and good fortune to others, such as "first-footing" and the eating of "good-luck" foods. Martin Luther King Jr. Day: January 15

Martin Luther King Jr. (January 15, 1929 – April 4, 1968) was an American Baptist minister, activist, and political philosopher who was one of the most prominent leaders in the civil rights movement from 1955 until his assassination in 1968. King is well known for advancing civil rights for people of color in the United States through the use of nonviolent resistance and nonviolent civil disobedience. Today, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is a federal holiday that lands on the third Monday of January, roughly around the time of King's actual birthday.
